Blair's place in history would be totally different had Iraq worked out better. The reason he went in is obvious he wanted to get his legacy. If the legacy of Iraq had been leading peace and a spread of democracy in the region he would have been a hero to people all over the world. He took a ballsy decision and he fked up.

Aside from that he presided over one of the best periods of development and growth in a generation, created lots of wealth for probably most people posting on this thread and he was the last charismatic leader we've had in politics since.

As a Labour supporter it's disappointing to see that every time he speaks out on something its like poison. The party is scared to death of new Labour but new Labour is precisely what the country needs. If history was different and TB was a newcomer against Cameron it would have been a landslide. Charisma vs bum face. Right wing leftism. That's what we need now rather than the utter shower we have. We'll see how things look when the 40% cuts start to bite. This parliament will see the start of a terrific downturn I reckon.

If and when the party votes fecking Corbyn that seals the fate of the country for 10 years....
But all that development and growth was on the hock and we are still paying for it.

You are delusional. Even if it had worked out well, historically the Iraq war was nothing. Blair's true legacy is the 'quantitative easing' that will ensure your grandchildren will never own their own home and enough uncontrolled immigration to change areas of the country irrevocably and for the worse. And both were done to try to rig the vote for Labour evermore, though I am sure he was happy enough to make himself rich out of it all too.

What you meant to write was, Blair's place would have worked out better if he hadn't lied to parliament about Iraq and if by some miracle of invading an unstable country it had happened to bring peace and prosperity to all, he would now be well regarded. Well, that does not wash. It does not wash because right from the start, the chance of a successful outcome in Iraq was Zero.

So Blair failed, he lied and he is a .

Well hindsight is wonderful and the TB hate campaign is a bandwagon. At the end of the day he got voted back in again by quite some margin. His reputation only suffered when the economy took a slide and it was more clear that lasting change in the middle East will never happen.

The only thing you're right about is that he got voted in again. There were millions criticising his actions and warning of the consequences, both in the Middle East and for us financially, but he fooled enough people to get them to vote him in again.

Hindsight is wonderful, but it's also useful to look back without the rose tinted spectacles sometimes too. If you have the balls.

Blair was a disaster. Still is.

S'funny.

I grew up, pretty much, as a kid under Thatcher - I was born in a cross fire hurricane in 69, she came into power in 79, I joined the Army in 88 with the Falklands still fresh in the memory, Ireland in full flow and the cold war being frosty, and frankly hoped I'd serve under Thatcher for the rest of my career. I firmly believed she had the well being of our country as her main priority. I'd happily go to war for her ideals.

As we know, she was ousted in 90 and John Major took the reins. A very good man surrounded by sharks. He's the last decent person we've had in charge. Anyway, I still served but after Major's 'vote of confidence' in 95, I knew the writing was on the wall and we'd end up with a Labour government sooner rather than later.

I left in 96.

Was never going to fight for those s.
