Love this bit (I doubt I would be fiddling with my phone taking snaps, rather phoning my loved ones to say I may not be home):

Passenger Christina Cathleen Coons of New York described the drama in car 12 of the train in an interview with Ouest France newspaper.

"I heard shots, most likely two, and a guy collapsed," she is quoted as saying.

Coons, identified as a 28-year-old vacationing in Europe, said a window broke above one woman's head. "A guy fell to the floor and had blood everywhere," she is quoted as saying.

She described lying on the floor herself and taking photos with her phone.

Jean-Hugues Anglade is okay. But he is shocked by what he experienced in the Thalys in which he was traveling with his son. They heard gunfire since they were in the car next to the one in which it occurred. He was heroic because he pulled the alarm.

Yes, he was well trained by the 'hard man' role he played, rather like our own ex East Enders version.

At last, a 'British IT consultant' gets good press!

If it hadnt been for those few chaps in the right place this could have been a very very different story!

Good on them for having the balls to go straight in and tackle the guy, they deserve a medal and a million dollars.

I wouldn't like to be in a very long tunnel under the sea if that had really kicked off yikes
I suspect at the point he put the gun through the scanner at the eurostar terminal, things would have got interesting.

Though of course nobody really checks car boots getting on "Le Shuttle", a "person known to the security services" might have been singled out for a search....Hopefully.

But he'd not be able to get those weapons on a passenger train in the tunnel.

Most worrying thing to me is how easily people are able to get their hands on machine guns in France, this is about the 4th attack I can think of in France where they were armed with an AK47

Top marks to those who restrained him though, I dread to think how long it would take armed response to get to the scene of an attack like this on a moving train
Come to Sweden, hand grenades are the flavour of the month here...

Good chance here for those who haven't tried tinfoil hat mode before to give it a go. Two "off duty marines" happen to be on the same train; in the same carriage , next to the same bog , where they can ID a terrorist loading an Ak47. Believe that and I have some magic beans to sell you

How can we hope to stop this type of thing though? there seem to be enough of these nut jobs around and many soft targets about. It seems never ending frown

Very well done to those who intervened, whoever they are. It could have been carnage.

Typical of early news reports to state that they were 'off duty US marines', when they weren't though. It's unfortunate that people have to embellish stories when the reality is that them not being marines probably makes what they did even more impressive.

Or more accurately, two off-duty USAF reservists disarm terrorist after his AK suffers a stoppage and he doesnt know how to clear it, giving them time to rush him. As said, dont rush to conclusions based on early reports.

These weren't undercover marines, delta force, or any other specialist unit. As airman (reservist airman at that) they will likely have only received minimal combat training depending on their roles, they were just 'normal' guys. This was pure bravery colliding with either panic and/or incompetence.

An AK in close-quarters like that would cause some horrific carnage, especially with that many rounds and a sidearm to go at as well as a box-cutter. These guys deserve every beer they will now be bought for the rest of their lives.

clap very brave (and very lucky) am loving the last sentence...

'As he was cocking it to shoot it, Alek just yells, 'Spencer, go!' And Spencer runs down the aisle,' Sadler said. 'Spencer makes first contact, he tackles the guy, Alek wrestles gun away from him, and the gunman pulls out a box cutter and slices Spencer a few times.

And the three of us beat him until he was unconscious.'

Of course, if he was in the UK at the time we would now give him a council flat, money and legal aid so he can sue us for breaching his human rights.

Also, I was thinking they deserved the appreciation of the French people and the article says they've already been given bravery medals - a bit early no?

Whilst the whole thing does sound like a film script, for those who are doubting the "coincidence" aspect of the story, do you not think the Americans on the train would have had a little more weaponry and equipment at their disposal than what looks like a ripped-up shirt to bind the terrorist with - no guns, no armour, no restraints, etc?

It is an amazing story but at present there's no obvious evidence that it's anything but just that?

If those three men did even 10% of what various articles claim they'll probably never need to pay for dinner in France again.

Hope it hurt.
