Bono now world's richest musician
Discussion
Being from North Dublin myself and being of a similar age to Bono (he's a couple of years younger than me), I have always followed what he and U2 have been up to over the decades. In fact, a brother of one of my best mates in Ireland was in the same class as Paul Hewson at Mount Temple school.
Having said that, I was never a massive fan of the band - apart from their very earliest music which we first started hearing in Ireland in 1980/81. At that time they were very fresh and vibrant - and quite anti-establishment (as were The Boomtown Rats - who hailed from South Dublin).

To me, U2 are not dissimilar to Oasis in that I love a lot of the music - for instance Zooropa is a cracking album to sit alongside the classic stuff - but I can't abide (some of) the band members.
In many ways the antithises of James Blunt who seems to be a decent chap who pukes out the most dismal music known to man.

For me, Joshua Tree was the peak.
Poor old Bono ,he does take some stick .....and quite deservedly so for some of his.,preaching to the masses , but as someone who saw them on their first.tour in the UK they had a real vibrancy and energy that shone through., they were mighty impressive and did well with their fist album. ...BOY
The sincerest form of flattery is mimicry., and Bill Bailey does a brilliant p!xs take of.the U2 sound.......but that's the thing ,ithey made it their sound.......they found a formular .
The other thing that they were shrewd to get on board was Steve Lillywhite the producer, so.somebody somewhere does give Bono & co some bloody good advice.
Now the Boomtown Rats......dear oh lord !

This wealth has very little to do with his abilities as a musician and more his perceptiveness as an investor.
170 million record sales makes your statement somewhat moot! We are talking here about the gains he has made from investment in a media business - not income earned from record sales.
Of course, his record sales had made him wealthy already - but this additional gain was from non-music related investments.
Bob Geldof made a packet from a similar type of non-music business that he actually owned and subsequently sold.
Some of these Irish musicians do seem to know what they are doing when it comes to using their money to make even more money.

Eric,
I appreciate the Irish loyalty card and rose-tinted specs, but just like Bono, 'Sur Bob' did not do everything on his own. He had a very very similar setup behind him.
I'm surprised you'd not be aware of that, considering the nature of your business
But he doesn't really care just wants to defend people having a go at Bono. I appreciate the Irish loyalty card and rose-tinted specs, but just like Bono, 'Sur Bob' did not do everything on his own. He had a very very similar setup behind him.

It's quite clear there's some man-crush going on.
I did not realise he had bad eyesight (Bono) which I'm assuming he wears sunglasses inside. I still think he's a tit though.
