My dad has decided he's interested in a 500SL or SL500 (or maybe 600) f the R129 variety.

It'll be his first foreign car since about 1985 (that was his only one - an Alfasud) and he's as apprehensive as only an old conservative can be.

He's willing to spend a fair bit more than thread limit if he goes ahead so I will update if he goes for it.

When I was a child he wouldn't have considered a German car so this is something new. When he was buying his XJS my mother suggested an SL but he laughed it away. So this is progressive for him.
Shame if this got left in the archive of the last thread, no leads I know of, rough budget?

A new volume, excellent smile

I have just sold a barge and need to purchase another quite quickly. I've never owned a Jag and am having bad, bad thoughts about this one (lovely looking XJS featured in the last volume): http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/j...

Only thing is it's in London and I'm in Scotland. Has anyone been to see this by any chance?

God help me I have just bought a new drivers wing for my W124 on Saturday at a cost of £180 plus VAT from the dealer!!

I note this doesn't have a hole for a side repeater but I am sure that's easily sorted!

If all goes to plan, I should join the barge club this week!

If the car is in as good condition as it looks, I will be driving it by the weekend. I won't post links as those linked tend to get sold very quickly!

Will post back if successful!

I know that he'd be happy paying up to £15,000 if it really was the right one. That would be a perfect 600, ideally.

We're having a look around. Thanks for dragging me into the new thread!

Well done all to get to volume 9!

The short answer to this thread is - buy a W124!

He shouldn't be apprehensive. They are great cars. If he can afford one, the 600s are a good place to put your money - they have really moved since when I started looking a year or so ago, and their rarity will move them upwards in value while the rest of the R129 stay still (in my opinion due to the number of R129s around).

My Dad is now considering a 190 for my mother, and I have started planting the seed of an R129 replacing his SLK320.

Oh don't get me wrong, he's excited!

It started at the weekend when we were having a car chat (as we always do when we see each other) and I mentioned I'd been thinking about an SL500 or 600. He didn't believe the prices you can get them for and I showed him and it snowballed until this evening when we looked at a few online.

He wants to do some reading around (he doesn't have or want a computer so I've printed some buying guides etc) and hopefully things will move quicker rather than slower.

There is a suggestion of spending half each on a good 600, but no concrete plans yet.

190E 2.6 manual with 104k miles for £2.1k. I don't like the spoiler, but it's cheap.
