So who's giving up the lotto in October?
Discussion
Unless you're referring to the people that play religiously and spend far too much (I suppose in comparison to what disposable cash they've got) on it, I don't really get the 'idiot tax' label that people give the Lotto.
It's no secret that you may not win and you've the same chance (all things being equal) as anyone else of winning it (people do actually win actual money), so why not have a go.
Personally, if there's a big Euro's jackpot and guaranteed UK millionaires up for grabs, I think it's well worth the cost of a couple of lines at 4pm on a Friday, purely for the escapism of mentally planning my forthcoming spending spree.

I gave up when the minimum was increased. I did some sums on what I'd spent and what I'd won. I can't believe how stupid I'd been. I think it worked out for every £1 won cost me over £100.
That theory would apply to most gambling though would it not, unless you were very good at it? Of course you're more likely to lose, why else would they invent these things but it's a bit of entertainment and £2 for (mentally) building a dream garage on a Friday afternoon, after a long week at work isn't bad value for me.roboxm3 said:

It's just a line people with no imagination trot out to try and feel superior. It's no secret that you may not win and you've the same chance (all things being equal) as anyone else of winning it (people do actually win actual money), so why not have a go.

Playing the lottery is no more idiotic than any other form of gambling - or any other frivolous crap people spend (waste?) money on.

I'm still amazed that people play it. I never have.
Quite. If someone said to you "Pay £2 for the chance to pick up *exactly* 5000 grains of sand in the palm of your hand, and win big if you do", would you pay the £2? Your chances of winning that "game" are considerably better than winning the lottery.

It is more idiotic than gambling on games of skill, which in turn is more idiotic than not gambling at all. Having said that it's not my money; piss it up the wall any way you choose.
I only pay for one line a week but I think you are missing the point of the Lottery. With normal gambling you are trying to achieve a certain amount of return for the money put in, whether that be a horse race at 5 to 1 or what have you. To think you can consistently beat the odds and make a profit over multiple bets is fairly foolish I agree.
With the lottery you know you will almost certainly not win, but there is an Infinitesimal chance you will and have your life transformed.
What you are effectively buying therefore is a dream.

I'm sure the guy local to me that won £11million feels a right idiot- shrug* someone wins, the odds of any given individual winning are ghastly.
