More numbers to pick from, greater odds, still £2.

Think this is my chance to opt out since I had the same numbers for years.

I'm still amazed that people play it. I never have.

Why on earth don't they just ditch the mid week lottery?

I only do the Euromillions anyway. I know the odds are higher but with the odds of winning being so small at least the main prize is bigger (although I will never win it).

Me neither. I once got a birthday card with a ticket in it and forgot to check whether the numbers came up.

They didn't wink

Where did you put the ticket? Behind the clock?

Just asking like...

Unless you're referring to the people that play religiously and spend far too much (I suppose in comparison to what disposable cash they've got) on it, I don't really get the 'idiot tax' label that people give the Lotto.

It's no secret that you may not win and you've the same chance (all things being equal) as anyone else of winning it (people do actually win actual money), so why not have a go.

Personally, if there's a big Euro's jackpot and guaranteed UK millionaires up for grabs, I think it's well worth the cost of a couple of lines at 4pm on a Friday, purely for the escapism of mentally planning my forthcoming spending spree.

I have urges to play it every now and again. I played Euromillions for the last two weeks for free after winning more than my money back on instant wins.

I put £20 into the account each time, spent £6 on Euromillions then won £30 last week and £45 this week.

I gave up when the minimum was increased. I did some sums on what I'd spent and what I'd won. I can't believe how stupid I'd been. I think it worked out for every £1 won cost me over £100.

Packed in lotto when Branson lost out on the contract. Told me all I needed to know about Comealot and Government running the 'game'.

That theory would apply to most gambling though would it not, unless you were very good at it? Of course you're more likely to lose, why else would they invent these things but it's a bit of entertainment and £2 for (mentally) building a dream garage on a Friday afternoon, after a long week at work isn't bad value for me.

If you find it so, then fill your boots. I would have more fun watching paint dry, we're all different.

It's just a line people with no imagination trot out to try and feel superior.

Playing the lottery is no more idiotic than any other form of gambling - or any other frivolous crap people spend (waste?) money on.

It is more idiotic than gambling on games of skill, which in turn is more idiotic than not gambling at all. Having said that it's not my money; piss it up the wall any way you choose.

Quite. If someone said to you "Pay £2 for the chance to pick up *exactly* 5000 grains of sand in the palm of your hand, and win big if you do", would you pay the £2?

Your chances of winning that "game" are considerably better than winning the lottery.

When I worked I used to have a punt on the horses and often dealt on various indexes and I did make a small profit but once I had to rely on my pension I gave up gambling except for the lottery which isn't really gambling in my book. It's just relying on pot luck. Now I get my kicks checking the premium bonds on the second working day of the month.

I only pay for one line a week but I think you are missing the point of the Lottery.

With normal gambling you are trying to achieve a certain amount of return for the money put in, whether that be a horse race at 5 to 1 or what have you. To think you can consistently beat the odds and make a profit over multiple bets is fairly foolish I agree.

With the lottery you know you will almost certainly not win, but there is an Infinitesimal chance you will and have your life transformed.

What you are effectively buying therefore is a dream.

  • shrug* someone wins, the odds of any given individual winning are ghastly.

Everyone knows that bit...it's £2 whenever, if at all, you choose...I think you're missing the point!?
