People seeing ta suitcase with a 'timer' in it ESPECIALLY IN AMERICA could get a bit twitchy.
So twitchy they left it until after school to haul him into the head's office? Massive over-reaction (note the 4 police) by idiots. I hope he goes into school next week with a big black ball with a fuse coming out the top and "Acme" written on the side.

But that would be even worse as they would revert to type, see him as a Loony Toon Bugs Bunny and the only clear and decisive response is to go full Elmer Fudd

Handcuffed and then denied his legal rights (access to his parents).

I like the way we are able to mock a totally genuine reaction to this.
In this day an age with terror cells operating around the globe and with their religious medieval mind-set whereby to sacrifice anybody in the cause of their beliefs goes without a second thought, that it is totally correct for teachers to be suspicious of anything that is not normal.
Also that the US seems to be a hot bed of other religious crack-jobs along with extremist individuals wanting to take a political or personal vengeance against others.

If it were the case that one day we read a news headline of "boy detonates home made bomb killing 6 classmates, but teachers thought it was only a clock".... I think the outrage would be higher due to the lack of action on what could be deemed totally obvious thing to do.

I'm glad you like it. I'm quite happy mocking stupidity when I see it.

Probably wasn't the greatest idea to also carry his Play-Doh for art class in the same case...

If you were a religious crack-job extremist individual with a home made bomb that you intend to detonate, would you show it off to people first?

More likely (sadly) to hear about a student gunning down or stabbing fellow class mates.

Are you trying to convey to me that all religious crack-job extremists are of sound mind and would do things in a logical organised fashion of normality?

The fact that 4 normal cops turned up, late in the day, suggests your comment is just slightly alarmist.

Surely this represents the 'other side of the coin' as far as who suffers from the acts of muslim extremists. He has his 'brothers' to thank for their part in this too, in fact the blame should really rest with them rather than the 'twitchy' Police department acting on instinct rather than common sense.

I doubt that this would have had anywhere near the same reception if the same thing was presented by a white American student. And there is nothing wrong with that, the muslim community (worldwide) needs to be sensitive to how they are perceived by the western world in this day and age. A bit of common sense from both sides would not have gone a-miss, but the rush to take the moral high-ground 'in hindsight' - ie. after the event has taken place is pretty ridiculous too, even from the White House.

The message should have really been not to carry around suspicious-looking devices, with the obvious undertone of 'especially if you share the appearance of ...'

Well someone had to say it.

And would you put a fk off massive red 7-segment display on it? I mean how comedy is that?

When I heard the article on the news I thought that's a bit of an over-reaction [from the school and the police]. But looking at the briefcase with circuit board - come on that's not normal for your average 12 year old! Reminds me of the scene from Men in Black where he shoots the little girl [cardboard cutout] because she is carrying some books on Quantum Physics. I think some people here need to get off their high horse - it's not like the people here haven't been shot accidentally for wearing a bit too many clothes and NOT jumping a ticket barrier .. or carrying a chair leg ..
