A good friend of mine has a brother who has some behavioural issues.

He phoned in a bomb threat to a local polling station round the corner from where he stayed.

When the police took down the door of is mum's flat, they found a "rudimentary explosive device". This later turned out to be an analogue alarm clock with some wires twisted around its feet, running into a shoe box through some holes he'd poked with a pencil, and inside the box was a box of matches and a can of Lynx.

This was in Scotland, and the brother was over 30 years old. So its not just the Americans who can over sell things a bit.

(NOTE - obviously, because of his bomb threat, the police were right to storm the place. But to actually classify his box of bits as a "device" was giving him far too much credit)

You know, for all the comments about "what does a Muslim/Asian kid expect taking that to school" if they had been racially profiling the kids who shoot up schools, they wouldn't have looked twice at a brown kid.
Quite.
+1 yes
Have another yes
Geeky, bullied white kids should all be frisked before they ever set foot anywhere near a US school or campus. How's that for racial profiling?

Kid is a genius. Certainly didn't miss out on making full use of opportunities presented.

Are you serious....a genius..? Because he took apart a tandy clock radio and resoldered it into a briefcase..?

FFS.

He's a keen inquisitive and mechanically minded kid, and that's great, but a "genius"....well not on the basis of his briefcase clock he aint.

Eh, if you calm down a bit, you'd realize that 'genius' was about part of using available opportunities, not of disassembling 70's clock and putting it into a briefcase.

Opportunity to do something - kid gets into white house, meets SV people, makes absolute most out of it = genius.
Opportunity to do something - bhes on internet about hard luck and being unfairly treated and makes fa out of it = not so much.

Or Dad, didn't follow this closely enough to read who was responsible for exploiting opportunities presented.

That's a fair point. I got nothing but a smack when I was this kid's age for disassembling a sewing machine to construct a rudimentary mains powered helicopter. Apparently it was "dangerous". Parents. rolleyes

His family complained about racism in the US and then they announce they are moving to Qatar of all places, a nation which treats South Asian workers as state-sponsored slaves - nice one. rolleyes

Oh well after reading about some of his political views I think Ahmed's father will fit in well in Qatar.

I was given some old telephones to disassemble. Didn't manage to make anything useful out of them.

Incidentally the BBC has a picture of Ahmed's clock here.

Now given that his father is a politically active Sudanese Muslim, you could be forgiven for giving that a closer look.

It would be interesting to see what the $15M is for. On a net basis the arrest gained him access to the most powerful business people in the US. He should be paying the school.
