rolleyes FFS When they ran the dyno in 2wd they didn't turn the traction control off, thats why the dash lit up like a christmas tree and why the gearchange was early, its no wonder it didn't make full power. The back wheels arn't moving the front are spinning, it's not in some 'special mode' it thinks its lost traction, at speed you also get the red brake light come on. If they turn the traction control off they might activate 'test mode' but not like this. All the gear, no idea.

Interesting as they said at the start that they have to turn the TC off which is how it probably triggers the 'cheat' mode. Yet on the test they didn't turn it off. Very strange.

Yep they definitely didn't turn it off. When you do the t/c light is solid not flashing. The only way you would know if you were in 'emissions cheat mode' would be to measure the NOx, it's hardly going to tell you on the dash. Bunch of muppets.

Funny you should say that. I was out with a family member at the weekend who I haven't seen for a couple of years. He owns a couple of garages and used to be a Skoda main dealer. They offer MOTs amongst their services. He was telling me that for some time, the testers have noticed that diesel engines from certain other marques will only rev to 1500rpm during the MOT emissions test, but that the test is supposed to be that you rev until the governor kicks in? Apparently they reported this to the Ministry some time ago and were told to just crack on. Not that anyone is suggesting that either (a) other marques are up to the same game, or (b) that the authorities have been aware for any length of time....

He did tell me which others; two specifically. As for "how do they know", well, it's my guess that the parameters for MOT are very similar to those for the original test; wheels stationary, steering dead ahead, handbrake on, etc.

When the rear wheels are stationary on the dyno test, does it not think it's on snow/ice and drop the power anyway?

Will it be a good idea to 'purchase' a VW/Audi in the near future thinking I could get a cracking deal?

Or will it business as normal and this 'cheat scandal' won't affect their selling prices/deals . . . . if the figures are right, £18bn is A LOT of money to pay off!

No one but VW can say in advance how much power and economy will change, because the "emissions mode" is designed to only operate during emissions testing. It definitely won't be operating in that mode on a full power run!

In answer to your question, in order to run a 2wd car on a standard dyno, you need to turn the traction control off (by hook or by crook) to run the car properly.

I think you are really over analysing this.
I had a DSG GTI (petrol) which would only rev to 3500 stationary.
Bypass this VERY easily by turning off the ESP.
Lots of "normal" cars limit revs when stationary.
Diesels only get a smoke test, they are not tested for emissions.
Petrols are done at around 3500/4000 with a red line of 6/7k
So 2500 with a red line of 4500-5000 is about right percentage wise.
Move on. No conspiracy here.

For people that believe the 'diesels are killing x thousand a year' nonsense, here is something that might educate you, it's specifically about EPA ozone limits - but the same concepts/fallacies/dishonesty apply to all 'pollutant' death claims/limits.
