I would sit there and read the newspaper all day if I had to, if she had right of way and there was nothing behind him he should back up. The onlookers were bullying her because she was a woman, simple as that. Quite how they thought swearing at her was going to convince of her anything is beyond me. Good for her, imo.
She didn't have "right of way".

Ironically, I think the fact she was a woman meant she didn't get her face smacked! If it were a guy in that same car, in the same position, with some Dodgers old dear in the other car, I'm pretty sure it would have got properly physical well before 40 mins.

And I'd not be at al surprised if it wouldn't be one of the school mums who'd have kicked off at him, kicked his car, yanked his door open etc. But woman or not, I'm sue it would have got uglier quicker if it were a bloke in the soft top.

Yep - maybe. The highway code does not grant "right of way" under any circumstances.

She may have had priority - we'll never know since we would have to have observed the actual incident occur. If he was past his give way before she passed the "priority" sign - then it's debatable whether she even had priority - but that's just speculation.

What the highway code does make clear is that a driver should give way to avoid an incident. It also states that you should drive with due consideration to other road users - she appeared to do neither. Her wanting to 'prove a point' doesn't take precedence.

If it was some burly bloke covered in tats sitting in a Transit with his arms folded there's no way those onlookers would talk to him like that, they'd be straight onto the old fella telling him to back down.

They should have just left it to one calm person to approach them both and offer to help, but "adults" never really leave the school playground do they?
I have a feeling a burly bloke in a transit would have had better things to do than sit there, would have backed up and the whole situation over in less than 30 seconds

What about two burly blokes in transits?
one is two thirds the way through the tunnel and the second one enters because he 'has priority' I still think 2nd would back up sharpish and theyre both on their way probably with a burly bloke 'thanks mate'

I find it amazing that anyone doesn't think the lady - even if the old guy was in the wrong - was basically more at fault during the 40 minutes in failing to recognise how she could have solved the issue for everyone if she had not - as it seems - had such an 'attitude'.

A good driver, even if in the right and the other driver isn't, will always take the easiest option which often is also the safest and let the other driver go on their way.

There's no concept of "right of way" in British traffic law. A right of way implies you can just barge through and fk everybody, which you cannot.
Yep the highway code makes that explicitly clear at the start of the "General rules, techniques and advice for all drivers and riders" section

"This section should be read by all drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders. The rules in The Highway Code do not give you the right of way in any circumstance, but they advise you when you should give way to others. Always give way if it can help to avoid an incident."

Exactly it's about giving way not asserting some false right of way.

I once had a 'standoff' like this. When I had my S2000, took a turn down a residential road which had a line of cars down the left lane, probably 200 yards long, making it quite narrow. As I reached maybe 2/3 the way down a bus appeared coming the other way, but rather than stopping and allowing me to pass the cars, he continues until we meet barely a car length from the end of the line of parked cars.

At first I assume he didn't see me, but no, he did and is gesturing for me to backup.confused He only needs to back up maybe 5 feet in order to give me enough space to pass, so is clearly just being a - he appears to have issues - and waves his hand gesturing for me to reverse. I'm not in a hurry and there was no way I was backing up 200 yards when he only needed to back up a few feet, so I switch my engine off....To occupy myself I begin organising my CD collection in aphabetical order. smile He seems perturbed by this, and shifts uncomfortably in his seat, and his early cocky grin is now replaced by a more stern expression. I smile and wave byebye

Soon, queues form behind both or us, making it impossible for me to concede in the unlikely event that I would. We're now at a stalemate. People get out of their cars to see what the fuss is, most seeming to take my side, given the position of the vehicles. One man even tries to convince me that the S2000 will fit through a 4 foot gap.

After about 20 minutes, the owner of the car on the end of the row of parked cars returns and moves away, allowing me to go about my merry way, with a wave to Mr bus driver smile

I had an almost identical situation...one of those small single deckers....he drove past a gap that he could have easily pulled into when he saw me...I don't mind reversing but I was driving my estate car, towing a tiltbed trailer loaded with my Integra so was not only articulated but also longer than the bus - "bus not allowed to reverse" apparently "have to get someone out from the depot"..... with cars now behind me I couldn't go anywhere even if I wanted to! After 10 minutes or so of ranting the passengers joined in and he suddenly managed to reverse the 5mtrs or so quite easily, albeit steam coming from his nostrils and ears.

Many year ago I had a similar thing happen, it was the very earliest days of mobile phones.

A street with parking allowed on one side, the opposite side. I nearly reach the end of line of parked vehicle and taxi pulls out on to my side of the road trying to force his way through past the parked cars. Not enough room by far and I would have had to reverse a couple of hundred yards at least.

The Taxi driver gets out, stanley knife in hand, threaten to use it to 'settle' the matter. I pulled out my mobile and before I could even dial 999 he got back in taxi and reversed to make way.

In hind site, I should have followed through with the call.
