Who buys a plant losing 200m a year? What can be done about cheap Chinese steel?

You don't import it or you tax the hell out of it, simple.

However what's not so simple is that the EU have allowed this to happen, our government is both powerless and spineless.

Yep EU government shafted the steel industry. Lefties here in Wales just don't get it and neither do most steelworkers just blaming the Tories.

I do think the Conservatives gain in Wales will be wiped out for their lack of effort.

I think I'm safe for a while in another Welsh steel company but the job hunt is definitely on this year.

It's not just that. Until we joined the EU we used tariffs to balance trade. Since 1973 we have not.

Do the French not own many of their industries....EDF power comes to mind. IIRC Italy gave a steel firm £??million for “environmental improvements” if that isn't state aid I don't know what is.

Don't steel industries exist in other countries in the EU?

Why are the EU not imposing higher tariffs?

guardian said:
Although not compulsory under World Trade Organisation guidelines, the EU has chosen to abide by the lesser-duty rule, which restricts punitive tariffs on dumped goods. For example, whereas the EU sets a tariff of up to 16% on dumped Chinese cold-rolled steel – a high-value product used to make car parts, household appliances and furniture – the US fixed duties at 266%.

If think you may find they either turn a blind eye to the regulations or find ways to get round the EU rules that bar governments from using state aid to prop up firms.

After the vote to leave the EU we will have all this extra money

Which we can then use to buy a bankrupt industry

I love it when a plan comes together

Yet the same EU imposed massive tariffs on sugar cane, who lost out? UK...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/re...

Tate & Lyle going to the wall over an EU incentive that they must buy EU sugar beet, unfortunately there is not enough sugar beet in the EU to satisfy the demand for Tate & Lyle, yet they are powerless to go elsewhere so are shutting down.

it was losing more than that when tata bought it!

i notice tata in the netherlands [also part of the old company - corus] isn't up for sale yet their energy costs/wage bills are probably in excess of that in the uk. difference being a motivated workforce and a government that recognises the impact that loss would have.

Or not so simple since we also export to China.
The supposed EU issue is a total red herring here. Unless that is you think our current trade agreement wouldn't have happened between China & the UK if we were out of the EU.
Honestly, while you're at it why not blame Blair, Brown & benefit mums for Tata moving on. rolleyes
