Until America does the right thing and bans guns, innocent kids will keep getting shot. It's that simple.
If it was that simple, there would be regular mass shootings everywhere, because outside of China and Vietnam, I can't think of anywhere off the top of my head where private ownership of guns is banned. There are about 1.8 million guns privately owned in England.

It's definitely more a culture issue, but they have a very high gun count. Simple legislation like how they're stored affects their image, in my opinion. They're seen as a tool in this country before they're seen as a form of self defence and I don't think that mentality is as common in USA.

Reading some of the comments on the various news sites I find it incomprehensible that so many Americans are blaming the 'liberals' for this and saying the answer is to arm MORE people. I know people that I wouldn't trust with a pencil sharpener but in the States they could arm themselves to the teeth.
No one is saying to arm people who can't be trusted to be armed. Neither are they saying that there should be more guns - that's just a media red herring.

What is being pointed out is that these things occur almost exclusively in places where the law abiding and safe members of society are not allowed to possess the firearms they already have and may legally possess elsewhere. Schools, Churches, etc are 'gun-free' zones by law and it is 'gun-free' zones which suffer mass shootings. The moron who shot up the cinema a couple of years back went past at least two closer ones to picked up on the only one in the area which had 'no guns' signs posted.
I'm not talking about what the media are reporting, I'm talking about the comments made by people with American locations responding in the comments sections of those articles, and some, many, are calling for more guns. Pick one site that allows comments and have a look.

Apparently Obama has had 15 US mass shootings while he's been the boss.

Watching the news tonight, for the first time and I doubt it will make a difference Obama said that it's become routine, he seems genuinely bothered but maybe he can because it's his last term. The sheriff in charge just had a news conference and refused to name the shooter and asked the media to do the same as he doesn't deserve the publicity.

President Obama said himself a few months ago that regulating firearms been the area he has found it most difficult to make progress.

In case you forgot what happened the last time you tried to shove tyranny down our throats you got your asses handed to you. I'd fix your own socialist problems first.

I'm not going to debate or discuss gun control with you brainwashed cretins.

Take my rights? Take my guns? I say come get them liberal wkers.
You're clearly a bit of a moron.

Do you know the reason behind the second amendment, Rambo? Or do you just think, "woohoo guns! My penis is small but my trigger finger is all powerful!"

Some things about Murca are great. The lack of proper gun control is not one of them. It is a sign of an insecure, frightened population who don't want to appear weak to the rest of the world.

Expand your IQ, fella, and by the sounds of it your gene pool too.

This is why it's unlikely anything will change in the US. A large (and very vocal) part of the indigenous population seem to be effectively morons.

Just waiting for the N.R.A. to say that if we armed all school kids, this type of thing wouldn't happen.

frown another mass shooting in a school, RIP.

As another poster put, guns in the UK and many other countries that allow legal (and regulated licenced ownership) are seen as tools, be it for hunting, pest control or shooting based sports. In the US they are seen as all that and that they are protection. I know of people in the US that dislike guns immensely, but own a couple because they feel they have to should an armed scrote break into their house because the likelihood is, said scrote will be armed with something.

In an environment where that thought train is common place it’s an upward spiral of ownership (escalation), it’s like nuclear arms, if one has them we all have to have them to deter other people using them.

Other problems with guns in the US; laws don't just vary from state to state; they can vary from county to county (just the same as alcohol and firework laws) so getting parity across all states is going to be hard work. Money talks big in the US, the fire arms industry is huge and can often find many sympathetic ears in congress (depending on the level of pocket lining going on). Also long as it is in the constitution, without a re-write of that nothing will change.

I’m not some softie leftie liberal, and I don’t think an outright ban is what is needed; careful regulation is what is needed, though that will be immensely difficult to implement as President Obama has found out.

That is an unduly cynical take on Obama, in my view. Obama has struggled to do something about the problems that the US faces. He is a pragmatic politician, but also a principled one, I think. He has failed on some things but has achieved a lot against heavy odds, the GOP legislators acting almost always for partisan advantage and hardly ever for national interest.
