Damn, that's sad. He was amazing on the field, and when my Mum once met him in a cafe he was a real gent.

Poor bloke - only 40.

I remember watching something on TV which had him and his blue R34; to me, at the time, he was the coolest person in the world.

Just saw this over here this morning. Miserable news. Genuine legend.

RIP Jonah. He was an exceptional power in rugby union and will always be remembered as a legend - the sight of him continuing to advance towards the try line with 3 players hanging off him was something else. Effectively he was a player who had to be tackled before he had a few strides to get up to speed, otherwise it was elephant gun time!

He did a lot for rugby. A bit like Bolt for athletics. I remember watching him as a youngster in the 1999 world cup and that sparking my interest the sport.

Very sad. He was also a great car enthusiast and a lovely bloke based on the accounts of my New Zealand based friends.

RIP, that is no age at all.

Can still remember Will Carling, Rob Andrew and players of their era being completely out of their depth trying to deal with him.

Sad news. He was a real man mountain and destroyed England in the World Cup but I'm not sure anyone cared as it was so good to watch. A school mate met him and said what a top chap he was.

The term 'legend' can be bandied around a little too freely these days. In Lomu's case however, it is so very appropriate - a giant of the game, in more ways than one.

Such sad news to wake to - thoughts are with friends and, especially, his young family.

Really sad to see the passing of Jonah Lomu.

For me he was an absolute legend of Rugby and sport, a game changer.

I'd rank him up there with Ali, Woods, Bolt, Federer, Pele for the impact he made and how people had to rethink things based on what he could do.

I'm not a big rugby fan but I've watched a lot of Jonah on YouTube and to my mind the players at this years World Cup were no where near his level of ability, miles behind.

He was a one off and I can't see any player making such a difference again.

RIP and sadly missed.

RIP

Two items surprised me this morning.

1) He was only 40. frown
2) *That* England vs All Blacks game was 20 years ago... yikes

I agree, THE player of his generation and the games has changed because of what he did. A very sad loss.

I am in genuine shock at this - I knew he'd been ill, but this was the first thing I read this morning and it saddens me.

I remember **that** game and he was clearly at the forefront of the game as it is now with the players the size and ability they are now.

A true legend of the game.

In case we need to remember it - I've watched it a few times already:

This is a compilation with a good music track of the great man. Only three minutes of clips but goodness me his strength, agility and acceleration are astonishing.

There are some big guys trying to bring him down but he just swats them like flies.

There hasn't been anyone like that since, nobody even close.
