Turkey Shoots Down Jet Near Syria Border
Discussion
From the radar map Puggit posted on the other thread it looks like they did that once then looped around and did it again.
Assuming the red line is the path of the plane?
Presumably the 10 minutes was while looping round?
If the yellow box is either where the plane was hit or where it landed it was well into Syria.
Anyone know the ins and outs of firing into or shooting a plane down into someone else's territory?

If that is true that is ridiculous I will agree. Quite how they managed to shoot it down in the tiny timeframe it transgressed will be interesting.
Surface to air missile I'd guess, the jet was outside Turkish airspace when the track ends.Nihat Ali Özcan, security expert at the Ankara-based Economic Policy Research Foundation of Turkey, fears a harsh response from Russia.
“It is very bad news for Turkey that a Russian jet was shot down. Putin will not leave this unanswered, he might retaliate in different ways, for example by cutting off Turkey’s natural gas supply from Russia over the winter. He might also choose to reply in kind, in a similarly aggressive manner in Syria. But one thing is certain: Putin will not stand for this, we have difficult days ahead of us.”

Al Gore could flog them some cheap windymills.“It is very bad news for Turkey that a Russian jet was shot down. Specualtion being voiced that this is all about the Turkmen that are part of the FSA which is being hit by the Rusians. IE: Find a weak excuse to shoot down a Russian plane to take revenge.
The Syrian Turkmen are a hangover from the Ottomans, ethnic Turks living in a part of Syria, once Turkey.
Not beyond Erdogan at all, that bloke worries me more than Putin, we would all be better without him I think.

There won't be any military retaliation from Russia, although I expect some withdrawal of natural resources to Turkey.
The Russians seem to be one step ahead these days and are very adept at playing this new game (See Ukraine).

Surface to air missile I'd guess, the jet was outside Turkish airspace when the track ends.Turkey amended it's published Military Rules of engagement (MRoE) in 2012 after Syria shot down a Turkish plane to state that intervention would be carried out on any unauthorised plane getting within 15kms of it's border with Syria so I can see how in their mind, the 10 minute violation might have occurred. The published radar track if it's correct also shows the Russian plane definitely crossing the Turkish border albeit very briefly.
However the Turks have also been complaining bitterly for over a week about Russia's attacks on the Turkmen's in the region who are old Turkish re-settlers and therefore considered allies as far as Turkey are concerned, in fact they called a meeting with the Russian ambassador to ask for these attacks to stop just a few days ago so this may have been a way for them to take a cheap shot at the Russians. If so it's a VERY dangerous game they are playing as I definitely would not want to be poking that bear, especially with Putin in charge.
Hopefully both sides will see that if this escalates, it could be a BIG problem so they'll be lots of posturing and "outrage" from both parties but it will all blow over. However I also wouldn't also be surprised if Erdogan develops a case of radiation poisoning in the not too distant future (here's hoping)
