Putin does not sound pleased. Apparently, the Russian Foreign minister is scheduled to be in Turkey tomorrow, a visit planned a while back.

If he withdraws from the visit then matters could be looking severe. I've had bad feelings about Erdogan from day one, there is no way that nutter should be allowed to draw us into conflict with the Russians, not costructive at all, not a bit. ISIS must be hooting with glee.

what's interesting to me is Russia' reporting of it being rebels. In my mind this is because Russia doesn't want a conflict with Turkey but would have to take action against them, in the eyes of it's people, should it be abundantly clear (without any doubt) that it was Turkish forces that shot it down.

It's ironic that the Turks may well have shot themselves in the foot by showing the world, as fast as possible, that they downed the plane and why they did.

I can't see it escalating the current conflict though, they will both be more careful and Russia will double the gas prices to Turkey or something.

Are Turkey an ally in all of this mess?

Surely shooting down something they knew had the likeihood of being Russian would be absolutely absolutely the last resort? And if the knew was an ally, not at all?

Putin said:
This event is beyond the normal framework of fighting against terrorism. Of course our military is doing heroic work against terrorism... But the loss today is a stab in the back, carried out by the accomplices of terrorists. I can’t describe it in any other way. Our aircraft was downed over the territory of Syria, using air-to-air missile from a Turkish F-16. It fell on the Syrian territory 4km from Turkey.

Neither our pilots nor our jet threatened the territory of Turkey. This is obvious. They are fighting terrorists in the northern areas around Latakia, where militants are located, mainly people who originated in Russia, and they were pursuing their direct duty, to make sure these people do not return to Russia. These are people who are clearly international terrorists.

Taking into account that we signed an agreement on deconflicting with the US, and as we know Turkey was among the ones that has joined the US coalition. Since Isis has such huge resources of hundreds of millions and billions of dollars coming from illicit oil sales, and they are protected by the armed forces of other states, then it’s clear why they are so brazen, why they are killing people, why they are carrying out terrorist attacks throughout the world including in the heart of Europe.

We will analyse everything, and today’s tragic event will have significant consequences, including for Russia-Turkish relations. We have always treated Turkey as a friendly state. I don’t know who was interested in what happened today, certainly not us. And instead of immediately getting in contact with us, as far as we know, the Turkish side immediately turned to their partners from Nato to discuss this incident, as if we shot down their plane and not they ours.

Do they want to make Nato serve ISIS? I understand that every state has its own regional interests and we’ve always respected that, but we will never allow the kind of crime that happened to today to take place. And of course we hope that the international community will find the strength to come together and fight against the common evil.

Turkey needs to be expelled from NATO. They've been supporting Isis buying their oil and shady deals to extract pieces of history from destruction at Isis hands.

Strange how they care so much about their borders they hold Kurdish civilians at.it in danger and shoot down fighters but are quite happy to let European jihadi tourists right on through.

Letting that Islamist government/country near Eu membership is insane. Let alone their continued membership in NATO.

That last sentence is the one that everybody appears to be missing. The eyes will be off the real problem now, just what IS want.

Putin has been asking for backing from Nato countries for weeks now to assist bombing IS.

Amazing, a f rabble of death-wish nutters, predominantly on ground, causing all this angst in the world.

And the EU want to sign Turkey up?

As said time to walk away and close all the borders with the region.

I'm no fan of Putin, but I am 100% happy for him to sort it out.

Bloody hell. Articulate and to the point ...very sharp. I would not underestimate Putin, one tiny bit.

Turkey has repeatedly warned Russia not to violate its airspace. It looks like the Russian plane must have been over an offshoot of Turkey for a matter of seconds, and then it was actually shot down over Syria (just) after 10 warnings!

Turkey had sent a clear signal that the next violation would be met with force.

Russian arrogance/stupidity at it's finest.

Why blame Turkey? If Russia kept overflying the tip of Cornwall, how many warnings would they get before force was used?

Why does he increasingly sound like the only one who is actually playing relatively straight here?

but also complete bks. Russia is no respecter of borders (Ukraine, Crimea, Georgia) routinely sends planes and subs on aggressive missions to probe others' airspace, and is conducting more airstrikes against non-ISIL rebels than against ISIL.

Was bound to happen at some point.

Turkey, bombing the Kurds for years (the best natural allies of the 'West' in the area), and now either themselves or using SYrian Turkmen to attack Russia.

Oh thanks Mr Expert. Lots of you abound these days.

And the west is a respecter of borders? Goes on all the time.

And if 'we' go in bombing in Syria, I could say the same as you 'was bound to happen at some point' (you know, the usual, civvies getting killed or similar).

Hope we keep the f. out of this.

I reckon it's because he isn't, or won't, be bound by the desire of western politicians to out-PC each other while the world goes to ratst behind them.

Watching some of our politicians is sometimes reminiscent of Chemical Ali

If the Russian planes had been bombing ISIS that might well be the case. But in actual fact they have been mostly bombing every rebel faction except ISIS, including some supported by Turkey.
