OK well to qualify it it's ste compared to professions requiring similar levels of numeracy, problem solving and qualifications such as accounting, law or finance. My career was in finance and my group would take MEng's over MBA's every time...
I did a BEng then a few years later went back did an MBA, found (find) both to be very useful in my day to day working life. I'm not in a career as such, but need to know about engineering, accounting, sales, personnel management, marketing etc.

I turned down going into 'the City' - we had recruiters camping out our engineering department. I know a lot who went.

I think job satisfaction and stress wise I made the right choice, but certainly not financially.

Why do you think job satisfaction is higher and stress lower in Engineering? I know people that are doing broadly similar roles in banking as they were in Engineering - i.e. managing projects or modelling something on a computer.

I think because ultimately we are not just about making money, but directly 'helping' improve people's lives through improvements of infrastructure, housing etc. Obviously you need the money in the first place to undertake it - and for that you need the finance system - but in the end it's a fairly ethically good job.

Spending 4 years (3 down, 1 to go) and several grand on course fees for a BEng is looking like it will enable a large and continuing wage cut furious
What field are you doing it in? How many years experience do you have? Where will you be based? Will you do contracting or consultancy?
I can give you a rough idea of what to expect right now.
The Course is a BEng (Open), path Q65, apparently a fairly vanilla MechEng.
As per the previous bit of my post, I'm in transport and logistics. In other words, I drive a lorry tongue out
As such I have no formal Engineering experience, just lots of tinkering, home mechanics and DIY.
I live in Newport, but for a reasonable sum I'll go anywhere. Including "Here's your Company Landy, tent and AK. See you in a few months" levels of 'anywhere'.
I'll do whatever gets me out of a bloody lorry, TBH.

The engineering council and predecessors have dismally failed the engineering sector over several decades.
They are a complete and utter waste of space.
I remarked on this during a residential school this year. I mentioned to one of the teaching staff that the course seemed to be more focused on making good IMechEng members than good Engineers. He didn't disagree.
