I think that's unfair. The U.S. has made a huge amount of progress over the last 50 years. Arguably it was starting from a low base but it must have been quite a challenge given how diverse the population is. There is quite a large nutty element but it's not the majority.
Sure, I'm being very blunt but I've seen it culturally going backwards since the turn of the century. Whether there on business or pleasure their is a stronger air of both elitism and intolerance that has been growing rapidly. Whether political, cultural or religious, extremism has been growing since the turn of the century not waning. It's not the happy, forward thinking and hopeful place that it used to be. Personally, my view is that excessive debt has driven divides through not just cultural elements of society but also through age groups within cultures.
You are an insightful individual. Lots of literature on this subject out there, too.

Shots have been fired at Fort Lauderdale airport in Florida, witnesses report.
Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said in a tweet: "I'm at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport. Shots have been fired. Everyone is running."
The airport said there was an "ongoing incident" at the baggage claim area in Terminal 2.
The US media report there was at least one person dead and several injured but that is unconfirmed.

I think it is something like 180 people killed by guns in 2017 so far and 6 under the age of 11.

Just found this.

Makes for interesting, if gruesome reading.

I think I'll keep an eye on it as the year progresses.

Where did the USA end up in the 2016 Shooting Each Other League? I have a feeling that there was some young upstart country beating them for a good part of last year, hence the strong start to 2017.

Keep it up boys, you need to retain your title.

It's scary that more have been shot accidentally than defensively - doesn't that indicate a bit of a problem with attitudes toward handling guns at the very least?

If the people that were accidentally shot had also been armed, they could have shot the person who shot them before they were shot yes

Ah, but they've excluded the 22,000 who commit suicide with firearms each year smile

Were an armed person nearby, they could have either shot the person about to commit suicide, thus reducing the suicide numbers or shot the gun out of their hand, also reducing suicide numbers. Win win.

what else to expect when everyone is allowed to have a gun, without any training whatsoever

This happened close to home for me in more than one sense. I live only a few miles from the location and have bought product from them direct. The location is in my daughter's patrol area, though she came off her night shift about half an hour before the horror began.

Orange County Sheriffs Office has over 1400 sworn deputies and Orlando PD has a further 800 or so. Even though the geographical footprint of the county is reasonably big, in the metro area a cop of one description or another, is never more than a minute or two away.

A very rare thing, a shooting story from the States with a good outcome. It's very hard to argue that this situation could have been resolved any way other than immediate lethal force.
Apologies for the Mail link but the US sites have loads of auto play videos built in.

Superb stupidity on display here. A Youtube stunt involving a .50 Desert Eagle pistol and shooting it at a bloke with a book held to his chest to stop the bullet rolleyes A predictable outcome that was sadly watched by the couple's 3 year old child and around 30 people watching the live stream.

I know little about guns and have not searched for any video (I understand YouTube or other sites are likely to show me detailed video should I care to see) but shooting a handgun from a range of one foot!? With "a book" as protection? Wtf?

A desert eagle no less. I know nothing of guns and even I know thats a huge handgun.

I would imagine the video isnt actually available unless she uploaded it before she called the cops after killing him! Unlikely.
