Get the £1190 million tax that Bernie Ecclestone avoided paying in 2008.

Maybe the charge should be scrapped?...
How's that going to save money for the government?
Some things shouldn't be charged for, especially when already 'charged' at least once with other taxes.

Getting rid of many punitive taxes might actually help economic prosperity in the long run? but I realise I'm probably in the wrong thread here... silly

I like the way the OP's own answer to '...save money' was '...more taxes'.

How about: The govt. can save money by doing less

For example does a grant for an electric car charging point make any sense? Would people not buy cars if they had to pay a few hundred quid extra for the charger? All it really does is take money from people that can't afford an electric car and give it to people who can.

In the same way, is knocking 5k off the price of a Tesla Model S a good use of taxes? If you can afford a 60 grand car you can afford to wait an extra 6 months to buy a 65 grand car.

Or the 'broadband connection' scheme that's just finished - allowing business to get a grant for the cost of high speed internet install, it was supposed to help business in rural areas, but the 3k limit doesn't suddenly make a 12k leased line install 'affordable', so all it really did was allow Virgin Media to collect their install fee from tax payers.

hand outs /benefits need changing so they cant all have sky tv and smoke like a chimney , fine feed and shelter people but it warms my wee seeing them all sitting there watching sky tv and smoking

i overlook some housing association places (yay) and the first thing you see pull up on move in day is the sky van lol

This every time and nobody does anything about it.

It's ok to look at NHS efficiencies but they cost millions to implement, the real cost saving wouldn't be seen for years. Benefits could change overnight and should be the minimum to feed you until you find a job no sky TV, fags, booze are luxury items.

I'd abandon all those 'regulation' bods - OFCOM, CQQ, Ofsted et al and recommend that the 'professions' that run those institutions do their level best at getting it right, without interference/oversight of handsomely paid regulators.

Publish monthly details on all government spending through 'charities' (so the public get a better idea of the scale of central funding).

Restrict MP's pensions to an average based on private sector rewards.

Move Parliament to Milton Keynes or Hull and lease out the Palace of W and all those other offices to whoever wants it.

Cancel Trident. Cancel HS2.

Invest all that saved cash in a 'once in a generation' educational push over the next 20 years to equip every school child with the best education tailored to their need and society's expectation (whether that be engineers, nurses or hip-hop artistes).

Stop subsidising major employers through in work benefits.

I'm just getting started - there'll be more when I wake up...

Both the OPs suggestions would probably cost more to administer than they generate. The late appointment REALLY pisses me off though, I work Flintshire the NHS and it's th only thing patients do that properly does my head in.

You got 4 weeks notice for a 30min appt and that's not long enough to do a thorough job as it is, it IS NOT OK to rock up ten minutes late without a care in the world /angryface/
True but in reality that 1pm appointment that you were 10 minutes late for you would probably get seen around 2pm if you were lucky. I realise that they have to overbook things to max out capacity but it boils my piss that the NHS cannot see me at the allocated time.

I always book my Dentist appointments for the first one on a Monday morning (to get it out of the way) and still they make me wait 10-15 minutes.

Any wonder the rest of the day just gets worse... confused

why is food free for those in hospital? The food served in very poor. So much so I had family bringing food in for me from outside. I appreciate many don't have that luxury but- you would have to pay to feed yourself whilst at home so why should you be fed cost free on the nhs?
Seriously, your first point of call is the NHS to cut food and not prisons? Make prisoners work for their keep. Doesn't it cost £20k a year to house a prisoner?

In the NHS, the food budget per person per day is very small - given the importance of nutrition in general health I'm not sure this is an area for significant (or worthwhile) saving.

Repeal the baseless, pointless and astronomically expensive Climate Change Act.

At the time of passing, so to speak, the then Labour government estimated the costs of the Act as totalling between £324 billion and £404 billion. That's approximately £16,000-£20,000 per household in taxes, levies, subsidies and higher prices. Benefits are illusory, in keeping with the Act's non-basis.

Nowadays within Turbine Toryism the costs won't have decreased.

Shoot everybody over 60. They cost loads in upkeep ( NHS, pensions etc ) and drive too slowly creating traffic jams.

Legalize all drugs and tax them. This is a win win. Savings from reduced policing/ prison costs and the extra income from the tax raised.

Fat young shop assistants who are afraid to drive anything more than 10ft long?

Actually I'll add them to the list, shoot them as well.

No point in smuggling fags.
Might as well go away for a few days and bring a suitcaseful back.
Tis what I do. Tis legal and still significantly cheaper including fights etc.

The best way to save money long term is to have a proper war.
Not a crappy one where we only send soldiers.
A proper one where we can wipe out a significant percentage of unneeded population.

OK serious answer.

Between 1997 and 2008 the UKs spending on a thing called 'social protection' rose by £80bn on an anuual basis in real terms.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_spending_...

My 'saving' would be to return everything in 'social protection' to a level equal in real terms to the £160bn a year that was spent before New Labia got hold of the purse strings saving £80bn a year.

Further to that I would impose a flat rat 15% income tax paid by everyone and scrap the universe of allowances, credits and tiers that give us the most confusing tax system in the world.
