Looking forward to spending our Strasbourg/Brussels rent on the NHS.
+1

Or anything else we feel like spending it on, like fixing the roads.

Hundreds of millions of pounds per week. A not insignificant sum.
Agree, but I think we're talking about two things here, there's the money no longer going to Brussels, but also the corollary of having to settle accrued liabilities, which is the cashing in of accrued assets.

A point that has been completely ignored and something you would expect Salmond to have mentioned, given that it was a key part of his referendum campaign in Scotland, "It's Scotland's Bank of England too" etc.

Of course the liabilities are being calculated on the basis of contributory percentages, which makes them much bigger. But that then means a contributory percentage ownership of all the EU's assets, those fancy buildings look to have a pretty hefty rental value for a start......

This all falls down when you consider what would happen on that basis if Greece left; as a net recipient, the EU would be bound to balance their assets and liabilities and write them a massive cheque to leave.

A sensible negotiating position would be a write-off of assets and liabilities and call it quits there as although the balance may be in the UKs favour, the arguments around valuations, what is committed liability arising from daft accountancy practices (carrying forward expenditure to make the budget look smaller) and whether those accounting practices were something the UK wanted or not gets too complicated and is, frankly, a distraction. It's unlikely the EU would agree to a cash settlement on the assets, as they couldn't afford it, and from the UK's point of view the rental value isn't particularly valuable if you believe the EU is doomed to failure as there'll be no one to collect the rent from soon enough. So yeah, best to just write it off and move on to something substantial for both sides.

But that doesn't let the likes of Clegg and the BBC off the hook for the way they ignore the second half of the liability/asset balance.

It doesn't seem to have occurred to to anyone yet the 60bn bill is just another bad news Brexit story designed to keep feeding the large number of MPs who will willingly overturn Brexit given any chance. People like Clegg and the LibDems should now focus on being united from Wednesday to get a good deal, rather than inviting and wanting to see a bad deal.
Its also rather odd how gullible and blindly accepting remainers are. Presented with a 60bn bill, you accept it as gospel without having the first clue what it is for, why ?

Oh fk off Cleggy! Settle our 'tab'. What a prick!
Yup. Didn't seem to understand the difference between having access to and belonging to. He really is not worth listening to these days......
That was an astonishing moment when he quoted what Davis said to try and back up his point, he really is utterly clueless.
When he started his long rambling monologue about his spanish wife, blah, blah, and then his Dutch(?) mother, blah, blah, who has lived here for 50 years..., I was so hoping some heckling wag in the audience had shouted out: "Send her home." laugh

Did you not hear what Davis said? The 'no deal is better than a bad deal' was because of threats of a punishment deal.

The EU want a good deal. The UK want a good deal. If anyone thinks they can punish us then WTO will have to do.
Correct.

I don't believe for a moment that the EU will want to punish it's own member states by imposing punitive tariffs on their exports.

I do think that we should be guaranteeing the rights of EU citizens in the UK before the process begins - even if our citizens are threatened with deportation.
Whereas I disagree, UK citizens should be the number one priority of the UK government and if the EU will not agree a mutual deal to protect the rights of these people I see no reason why we should do the same. Whilst it is 'the right thing to do' the EU refused to discuss this before article 50 is triggered so they created this situation.

How would you feel if you were a UK citizen living in the EU and you saw the rights of EU citizens in the UK being protected whilst your own rights to live in the country you reside in are still up in the air?
I agree. Yes it's nice to be nice but sometimes you've got to be pragmatic.
Have another +1.

I'd see it as a good opportunity to boss it. Won't do her any harm being better known in England. McLuskey's a dinosaur Corbynite, Nandy's a snivelling soft Corbynite and Nuttal is Nuttal so it shouldn't be much of a challenge to be the voice of reason.

Ruth and Kate will be the only sensible ones. Len and Labour women will be well worth tuning in for because they are so bad and in competition with Ukip man to see to see who is the least worst of that trio.

Just lately, every week is turning into a rerun of the last, in terms of subjects, questions and answers.

I'm sick to death of hearing about Brexit, Nicola effing Sturgeon and how st Corbyn is.

^^Agree. Every news channel/programme seems to rerun the same subjects. Lots of talk of what if etc and clearly no-one knows. its painful and very boring.

No SNP? What's going on?

Nuttall; will he be dressed up in tweeds like a pox doctor's clerk on his way to the National Hunt racing at Fontwell Park?

McClucky; I dread listening to his adenoidal communist nonsense.

Anyone know anything about the woman from the IEA?

Nandy; sounds like the name of a chicken restaurant, and probably about as politically relevant.

Ruth Davidson; most likely in for a rough ride. Easily the best intellect on the panel. Her sexual preference is lesbian.

I think I'll probably give it a skip this week and watch last week's This Week.Anyone know who is on this week's This Week?

Plenty of references to her on the thread, probably worth watching the program for her alone.
