I fancy a steak so was looking for a steak restaurant locally. I found http://www.millerandcarter.co.uk/ which looks to have branches all over the place. Anyone been, any recommendations? I had a look on trip advisor in respect of my local branch and seems favourable.

I've eaten in my local one 3 times. Once it was great, twice it was very bad. Hopefully you'll get it on a good day hehe

Blackheath is probably the closest to Bromley.

I've been to the one in Beckenham/Shortlands

It was ok, nothing special but a good chunk better than most of the other places in and around Bromley and superior to the leather other chains serve (at half the cost admittedly). When lookijng for a steak near to where I am I always go up to town, takes ~30 mins to drive to the south Bank or (same on the train after a walk at the London end) to go to Hawkesmore or for nearly as good and far cheaper, Hixter/Tramshed.

That's the one I was thinking of going to.

Cool, thought you were local. I went about 6 months ago now and had a steak that was nearing £25 form memory, was cooked well but the quality of the cut wasn't 100% and was a little chewy despite being "dry-aged" sirloin.

In the immediate area its the best around I reckon (although don't generally eat much steak), I'd recommend going to Hixter on the south Bank though above it, we far, far, far prefer it for near enough the same cost and its only a 30 in driv.e

I've been to a few locally and they are good, but the competition round here isn't great.

Agreed. The one in Ruislip is perfectly acceptable, but no more than that.

The one in Wilmslow where I work is utter st. Cau on the other hand (in Wilmsloe) I rate above the Hawksmoor and Gaucho in Manchester

Agree with above. The kind of place that promises to offer a proper American style steak experience - but ultimately they're pretty thin, weedy cuts and certainly not top grade prime stuff. Average at best

Our nearest used to be a Beefeater which closed, had a lick of paint and re-opened as an M&C. Only the prices appeared to have changed (upwards!).

Interesting. So is it the same company? (Whitbread?) is it just a rebrand for Beefeater to push it upmarket?

No, Miller & Carter is a Mitchells & Butler brand.

My local one used to be a Harvester, so is an improvement.

I really want to try Hawksmoor, I work reasonably close but a colleague went and didn't rate the steaks well. They loved the mac a cheese and one the puddings. Still want to give it a go.

Hawksmoor is brilliant.

Miller & Carter is average, 5/10 on a good day. I've been to both the Solihull (twice) and Reading (once) locations and never felt it was worth the effort/money.

Did a bit of digging. Pub brands seem to swap owners at a dizzying rate. But it appears Mitchell & Butler is a sub- brand of what was Bass., who run Vintage Inns, Browns and a bunch of other well known eateries. And they did buy up a load of Beefeaters and Brewers Fayres and have pimped them up as these supposedly "premium" M&C steakhouses. So, in essence, yes they are just overpriced Beefeaters trying to look like one of the quality Steak joints you find all over the USA, but with rather crappy traditional thin English steaks

There was nothing really wrong with the steaks at Hawksmoor when I went, just overpriced for what didn't seem to be any better quality than any other decent steak place. Cau has a spiral cut 500g rib eye done in Chimichurri which I love, but that may just be because I tend to prefer interesting flavoured / spiced food.
