Just seen an ad for this f1 collection from panini on tv. Might sign up for the first 6 issues as you get bonus gifts including 3 extra cars. The models look quite good on the website.

No ciggie logos on the period cars - such as the JPS.

So, essentially inaccurate and unrealistic.

"The models are perfect in every tiny detail of the original single-seater"

Grossly misleading, since even at a brief glance, the models appear to be total garbage.

That's what I thought for £2.99 it's a decent toy. I might get a marker pen on it and print Marlboro on the rear wing to fix that for them.

That's fine. However, their claims that they are accurate and authentic cannot be true so those buying thinking they are will be misled.

Which aren't even up to the job of toy cars. Little BS2 broke Sennas rear wing off within 20 minutes then started with the tyres and wheels. Senna wouldn't have stood for such shoddy build quality.

They are being touted as "collector's models", and that usually comes with a "not a toy" warning.

For the love of god, don't get Senna fans started on "shoddy build quality"...

Who are the models made by out of interest?

Bought the MP4/4 this morning & I have to say that for £2.99 it is actually quite a reasonable model.

Well put together, fairly accurate although it doesn't feature Marlboro logo's because we all know that tobacco advertising is now frowned upon hence no Marlboro, JPS, Camel, Gitanes etc etc.

I must take issue with the earlier comment that the model is not accurate because it lacks ciggies advertising. Daft thing to say tbh because the tobacco logo's were banned in certain countries in period so to reproduce the cars now without tobacco logo's doesn't make the models inaccurate.

Anyway. For a modest outlay every couple of weeks these are good way for people to collect a set of GP cars.

Ideal for my 10 year old because he won't be spending £40 or so on the Minichamps cars even if they did model these older cars which, as far as I am aware, they won't be.

Annoys me that people slag stuff such as these models just because they are 'cheap'.

Granted they are not perfect but the average bloke on the street isn't going to give a toss.

I think they are good value so maybe a little praise should be given to someone who is producing models at an affordable price.

IIRC the '88 MP4/4's ran with a barcode livery for the races where tobacco advertising was banned, never plain white as per the model. So it is inaccurate and possibly poorly researched into the bargain.

Plus, all the models of cars that predate the ban will be inaccurate by default, since there was never an alternative livery.

I am fairly certain that the MP4/4's at the MTC are plain white - no Marlboro or bar code livery - as is the car at Donington.

Might be proved wrong so I will dig out my photos.

The car at the MTC is. However, it doesn't mean it was raced like that. I should think the Malboro logos were removed prior to display and the barcodes would just remind people that they should have Malboro on them.

I haven't found an image of an MP4/4 racing in period without either on, unless it's been photoshopped.

Panini's claims that the cars are perfect in terms of period livery, mechanical detail etc might be OK for some people but others who take things like these seriously will perhaps see their statements as a misrepresentation.

I might go and buy the first one, because it's a cheap model I might add Malboro logos to for practice or give to a young relative to show him what F1 should be like. I wonder how many more first editions are printed than second. I'd hazard a guess at 5x.

The price implications of buying the whole series are not "cheap" or casual. Prudent eBaying of a few more quid will deliver a collection of far superior models IMO.

That's not then representative of how they were "in period" as you said in your original post.

McLarens' own website carries an article on the MP4/4 which has numerous photos of an MP4/4 in plain white livery - as in no Marlboro, McLaren or black vertical stripe livery.

Whether or not the photos have been photo-shopped is not known & I have no idea whether or not they are.

I have also found one image on google of a plain white MP4/4 although I think that image might have been photo-shopped because it is linked to a Codemasters F1 game.

A search of fleabay revealed that Minichamps, who are not known for producing inaccurate detailing, also produced plain white MP4/4's, MP4/5's & MP4/8's.

These are original issue models which would have per-dated the stupid ban on tobacco advertising so I have no idea why these where produced in plain white livery.

Maybe Panini decided to remove all reference to tobacco advertising hence their model not showing the vertical black stripes.

Anyway, to avoid adults arguing over just how accurate the model is, i have emailed Panini to ask them why they chose the produce the model in plain white.

It's banned AFAIK

eBay can get pissy about people listing tobacco liveried models, too.

Of about 30 listings on eBay for MP4/4s of various sizes. None are plain white. 4 have tobacco livery. The rest are barcodes. Of the ones recently sold, none are plain white.

Of all the Minichamps I have the only ones with the tobacco livery have been reworked retrospectively. As I said above, many of their models are left blank for people to convert. The JPS cars even have spaces in the pinstriping where the letters of the aftermarket decals pass through.

In terms of the Panini collection, again, as above, I think diligence at toy fairs, boot sales and around eBay and the like would yield higher quality models for the same, or not much more, money. All of the stuff that's in the books would be widely available elsewhere.

There's no arguement, they never raced as represented by the model in question.

Sure, museum examples might be like that, but do you want a collection of recently altered museum pieces, or a collection of models that accurtely represent the cars that actually raced?

This is a post from EagleMoto4-2 on my McLaren MP4/6 build thread elsewhere on this forum:

Just to add more to your reference material. Some shots of the McLaren they have at the National Motor Museum. This was taken with a Nikon DSLR so colour reproduction should be better than the Senna picture.

As you can see it's an MP4/4 with both the Marlboro and Barcode removed PLUS they've changed the red nose cheveron to be curved. It's altered to the extent that, at a glance, I probably wouldn't instantly recognise it as a car I witnessed in real life winning the 1988 BGP (in the pissing rain).

Just to illustrate the utter stupididy of it all, it's flanked by cars carrying full John Player Special and Rothmans liveries.
