Because, post referendum, Erdogan's girlfriend will be giving Turkey the golden ticket. smile

They don't need to be in the EU to enjoy open travel.

A German comedian mocks the Turkish president. That same president calls up his German compatriot and the comedian is arrested. Merkel has promised Turkey everything they demand while turning a blind eye to Erdogan's despotic ways. It will have very profound consequences for the EU...and us if God forbid, we're still in
It is worrying that a waste of space such as Merkel wields so much (too much!) power, and panders to a despot.

The latest is Merkel discussed with Reggie boy the need to address domestic political issues (namely the anti-AKP / anti-journalists - sorry, meant to say the anti-terror) laws here. He has paid his usual lip service and made encouraging (read: vacuous) noises.

Tomorrow's headlines will read "Erdogan chairs first meeting of the new cabinet, all agree the presidential system will go ahead this year, no change to Turkey's anti-terror laws, EU should stop lecturing Turkey about domestic issues",... blah blah blah.... Normal service resumed.

Turkey's eventual/inevitable membership of the UK is one of the main reasons I'm voting out. Even giving them visa free access is worrying enough.

Turkey (along with most Muslim countries, yes I know it's technically secular before anyone starts, but it really isn't) is utterly incompatible with the values of Western Europe. You cannot go about arresting people because they insult your president. The thought of Turkey having access to the European Arrest Warrant system is utterly terrifying, quite frankly.

Why does it matter what their intentions are? It's irrelevant and impossible to prove, so lets just stick to the facts. Turkish citizens will be free to go where they please.

Not content with the power he already has, Erdogan now wants to regulate everyone's reproductive organs.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on Muslims to reject contraception and have more children.

In a speech broadcast live on TV, he said "no Muslim family" should consider birth control or family planning.

"We will multiply our descendants," said Mr Erdogan, who became president in August 2014 after serving as prime minister for 12 years.

After what Erdogan said there'll be no chance of an Onanan Empire. With all the reproducing, nobody will have time to give a toss.

Furious President of Turkey abandons Muhammad Ali funeral and flies home after being cut from speech line-up and banned from laying a cloth on boxer's coffin during Muslim ceremony

Recep Tayyip Erdogan had specially flown to Louisville, Kentucky, to say farewell to Ali
But the president’s office said Erdogan left the United States for Turkey late Thursday after attending the prayer ceremony
He was due to speak at today's multi-faith service but lost his slot due to 'lack of program space'
Funeral organizers also 'refused to allow Erdogan to lay a cloth from the Kaaba on Ali’s coffin during the Thursday ceremony'
In addition he wanted the head of Turkey's religious affairs directorate to recite part of the Koran, but his wish had been refused

Another example of Erdogan's contributions to equal rights.

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/turkey-s-preside...

Women who choose careers over motherhood are trailblazers in some parts of the world. But in Turkey they're "deficient" — at least according to the nation's president.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan's declaration that such women were "half persons" is the latest in a series of remarks by the leader of a key U.S. ally that has sparked outrage and fear among liberals and human rights activists, who allege he's leading the country down a path to conservative Islam.

Having just driven back to base with commercial radio news on in the background, there's a claim that the FBI et al knew about this guy, that he had expressed affiliation with ISIL, and one of his mosque buddies was interviewed saying he seemed like a regular guy. No idea how accurate that is but it's out there.
