Not that I'm condoning it, but there's a hell of a difference between throwing a mobile phone at someone whilst in a heated argument (which is what I understand is alleged to have caused 'the bruise'), and 'beating women'.
Absolutely - but for me in those events I either pop down the driving range and blast a few balls or the squash court. Total stress relievers.

Each to his own and all that.

Read the rest of the article though, or the other summaries of the court hearing. He's alleged to have done more than just the phone lobbing.
Alleged being the operative word.

There is no evidence beyond a verbal allegation from a woman seeking a very lucrative divorce...

Absolutely. But there's no more evidence that a phone was thrown, either.

The point I was making is that there's probably more than just the phone throwing behind Welsh's comment.

Apparently he didn't like her bisexuality and lesbian friends.

First world problems eh? You're Johnny Depp and your hot wife also likes girls, how truly awful!
Sounds like he's prime Dr. Beverly Hofstadter material...

Anyone see her on Top Gear a few years ago? She admitted to being a gun-loving, muscle-car-owning Texan rug muncher.

Probably not entirely suitable doting wife material.

Yet he still married her.
So he does have mental health issues.

I know what you're thinking, but maybe it's not so great having a wife that would prefer to be spending time rug munching with her 'friends' rather than playing hide the sausage with him? "Well I'm bi, so that means it's ok for me to sleep with other people, as long as they're female".

He might be a bit nuts, fame and fortune tends to do that to people often. But what you're seeing and hearing is the gutter press taking advantage of a failing relationship and blowing it up into 'news'. If every waking moment of our lives involved people watching/snooping on us in order to make money, there'd probably been some juicy dirt on all of us.

Maybe he did hit his wife in a heated argument as they were splitting up, it's not nice and it's not clever, but how many of us have never made a mistake in life? Maybe it only happened that one time, or maybe it's been going on for ages. Maybe it was just tit for tat - she could have been chucking things at him and he threw something back, and was unlucky enough to get a direct hit? Maybe he didn't hit her at all and it's just a trick with some make up?

I've never met the bloke, so I'm not going to judge. Certainly not before all the facts come out (if they ever do). Also, I believe his mother passed away recently? Never an easy thing to deal with, and it could tip some one that's mentally 'delicate' over the edge.

There is a visible and documented bruise, which if Mr Depp wishes to deny was caused by the thrown phone that she alleges, would have to be explained by other means.

Not in the eyes of the law there isn't, assault is assault regardless of whether you ding someone in the head with a phone or punch them in the face.

That strategy seems to be working reasonably well for Amal Clooney.

In terms of guilty or not guilty, sure, I agree.

In terms of how severely the crime was viewed for the purposes of sentencing, or (perish the thought) gaining sympathy to negotiate a large divorce settlement, far from it.

Was the phone thrown at her or was it thrown back? Was there a phone? Are they both employed in an industry where convincing a receptive audience is part of their employment?

I'd just assumed his brain was slowing down after years of substance abuse a la Ozzy Osbourne. Substance abuse sounds too strong though, like I heard somebody else say: "alcoholics go to meetings, I go to bars"

I don't see it as abuse if he enjoyed it.

I do hope his appearance and behaviour is just an act. I heard him on the radio the other day and I have to say he sounded a bit weird. I would not like to see the downward spiral of another though.

Or try to manage your emotions like an adult?
