I haven't really heard all that much about this, but I suppose it's a semi-serious election that could have knock on effects. Far more of a big deal than the PCC elections.

The National Assembly for Wales election 2016 will be held on Thursday 5 May 2016, to elect members of the National Assembly for Wales (AMs). It will be the fifth election for the National Assembly, the third election taken under the rules of the Government of Wales Act 2006 and the first since the Wales Act 2014.
Polling puts Labour moderately ahead (narrowing ~10% lead) of Cons & Plaid, and UKIP just behind them. LibDems lagging.

Well Labour have won every time since the Welsh Assembly was setup so it gives Dave Cameron a useful mirror when things go badly in Wales to say, look they're labour controlled what did you expect. Although he's keeping rather quite at the moment as the Junior Doctors are only on strike in England and working normally in all the devolved nations.

As for it's import well London has it's mayoral race, other areas of the country have their regional votes so why not Wales as well? Either that or it's part of the EU programme of 'Divide and Conquer', breaking large countries up into smaller regions.

Wales is also the only area you get a chance to vote for a large number of Monster Raving Loony Party members as they're fielding 25 candidates.
