is 8 to 5 normal working hours
Discussion
My first job was 0900-1700 and a lot of the older guys were on 0900-1630 contracts!
Later jobs have been 0900-1730. I was offered a few roles in London a few months ago which were all 0900-1800, it seems to have become the new norm (or perhaps always was and I have been lucky for the last few decades).
Civil Service (so largest employer in the UK) is a 37 hour standard working week (i.e. 7 hours 24 minutes per day) and 36 in London.
Of course, that's contracted hours. I do not remember the last time I worked anywhere where a lunch hour was an hour.

My first job in Finance was 9am - 5pm, then my current job was 9am - 5.30pm, that extra half hour was a pain especially with the 30-45 min commute either end, which was a 5 minute walk in the first job. Then the job went down to 9am - 5pm as we moved to shared Offices and they closed at 5pm, then I moved to working from home, so whilst technically still 9am-5pm, it's anything really :-)

9-6 is almost standard in many jobs in London now, so I wouldn't say its unusual.
Ironic isn't it - you can pretty much guarantee everyone in the London office will have had an hour or more commute, and the hours are longer than in the rest of the country. But people still do it ...
