so what happens when they get alongside the plane???

is it as simple as 'look in the windows and see if the pilot looks a little too arabic...' or isn't wearing the correct uniform

if so, shoot it down!!

I imagine it's there to monitor and relay visual information back to command, if the plane complies all ok if not I suppose someone somewhere makes a decision to shoot it down.

And why had it veered so far off line? Aren't they all on autopilot these days? Any news on that?

Wouldn't like to be the one to make the call to shoot it down if necessary!

Was it it taken out over the sea by the quickest route in case shooting down was necessary ?

Back on topic...

Getting to be the norm? Last month was at computer and there was a hell of thump/bang - very sudden and short -
I thought a bloody tree had fallen against the house (Oxfordshire), looked outside, nothing?
Then later a neighbour said what was that noise this morning?

Ahh. Penny dropped.

Certainly not the norm, its rare theyre authorised to go supersonic over land because of the chaos that ensues (public lack of awareness of what Q does, damage claims, 999 lines being hounded). Obviously they'll do it to meet the threat, so if theres been a delay on the ground (which shouldnt happen but these aircraft are basically giant computers and not even my phone starts up properly every time) or if the intercept target is somewhere at the limit of QRA boundaries then theyll do whatever necessary to get there as quick as possible.

. Including one girl who was complaining that the RAF shouldn't authorise things like this at night as it woke her kid up.
