I'm thinking about the trackday at Donnington on the 6th June.

I notice from the Javelin website that the drive by is 98db. There are a few older posts on here suggesting that the 7.2 GT3 will exceed the noise limit?

Does anyone have any recent experience to either back this up or refute it?

I'd hate to waste the time and money......

Maybe drop Jonny at bookatrack a line to ask. Is a .2 typically any louder than a .1? 997.1s are fine there (BaT's rental and I did a day there in mine last year with no problem).

It seems to be the 997.2 GT3 that trips up most of the time. All the earlier GT3 variants at our day there last year were fine. It's still a good idea to short shift out of the chicane and the old hairpin though. wink

Make sure you don't drive to Donnington, as Donington is some way away.

I had my 7.2 GT3 (completely OEM) tested at Goodwood for a 105DB day, the reading was 104DB with Sport off

Hi Tom,

Yes that was my experience at the time. I used to run a Porsche day at Donington with Bookatrack and we would get 40 to 50 cars. It was your model of GT3 that struggled with noise. Anything earlier was pretty much fine. Which is a shame because there are quite a few of us there on the 6th with Javelin.

All 997 GT3's are on the limit at Donington, the noise meter on the pit wall is the one to keep your distance from. It's position about 5m Redgate side of the gantry on the pit straight and is bolted to the pit wall. If you shift up a gear and stay to the right as you pass it, you will normally be ok, but if the wind is blowing towards the noise meter you will struggle. Never had an issue with the one at the old hair pin.

Whilst noise limits are carefully policed at Donington 98dB drive by is not so different from the 105dB static at Outon ..

But a story. I was driving at the time a 996GT3R --- a 2002 ALMS car. I had just had the exhaust re-packed to reach the required noise limit ...

Went out on the sighting laps, stayed out to warm everything up --- and as soon as the last sighting lap session ran into the main part of the day, ran straight out of the chicane to overtake how ever many cars it was before the braking zone into Redgate.

The next time round I found my black flag waiting for me on the pit wall, and came in.

What to do ? Well, nobody wants to spoil a good day and that went also for those in circuit control. I explained what I had done and with strict instructions to short shift and with the promise that I would then be black flagged as I approached the limit -- advised to gently build it up.

Unfortunately for me, the RSR engine was designed to dump a large amount of heat and sound energy with the exhaust gasses and my best laid plan swiftly resulted in a blown head gasket.

Which was all the more frustrating with the lunchtime request from circuit control.

I had been so well behaved, they wanted to calibrate some new noise testing equipment and since I was the noisiest car there, could I give it "the beans" after lunch ?? They would tell me when to stop frown

Honestly.

Thanks for the responses gents.

The car was fine at the Oulton RS day but the exhaust flaps were closed on the static test. I think I'm right in saying there's no drive by monitoring there.

Sounds like if I do go I'll have to back off or at least short shift where the monitors are.

I would have thought it sensible for Porsche to leave the exhaust flaps closed unless the noisy exhaust is selected ??

If running close to the standard noise limits, to not do this would appear silly --- unless for some mechanical benefit ?

Presumably static? Not very easy to relate static to drive by as different cars will be very different between their static and drive by. Also depends on how far away the drive-by meter is.

Same(ish) for me (7.2 GT3) I reg'd 103db (SPORT OFF!) at Bedford where 101 is the Static Limit

They let me on and I was quite careful (judicious mic spotting!) but was still flagged once for noise.

IMHO you will struggle at Donn where limit is lower - even short shifting/keeping revs down out of corners - that's IF they let you on...

Getting on isn't the issue as they don't static test at Donington.

I believe the flaps open up at higher revs to help reduce heat build up. It's not just accoustics. Again, from reading on here, I also believe that artificially over riding the flaps can cause heat build up and damage to engine and exhaust parts....

That said I'm no expert.

For the sake of a little sample - I got my 997.1 checked at Brands recently and it read 103.7.

Sport button off, aircon off, clutch in, car warm.
