I thought this might make a interesting thread. It may have already been one in the past I couldn't find one.

I usually find the concepts to be better looking than the final production car after the bean counters have been meddling.

Shows us the worsed cases of vision to reality.

Having trouble accessing pictures but for me it has to the Boxster. The concept was gorgeous and I nearly put down a deposit there and then. Glad I didn't at the production car looked like a bar of soap.

It's simple - the concepts just aren't viable either from a cost, manufacturing, assembly or from a regulatory point of view.

It's the studio designers going mad...they're not engineers, for a reason.

Porsche Gruppe B. Arguably, the 959 looked very similar, but there was something so special about it that makes me drool. And, 1983!

I think this is a pretty good starting point.

The Renault wind concept sprang to mind.

Yay!

Never mind the width, feel the subtle yet distinct self-awarenesss of dissapointment built specially into each and every production example:

(but the doorhandle survived, and as a strong gene, made it onto the Lotus Esprit...)

The Brera obviously.

Ended up being an absolute lump with a fat arse, front wheel drive and crap compared to a V8 RWD beast.

The best part about it is that it shares a saloon brother that looks absolutely amazing.

That door handle was a classic.

The WRX STi looks decent imo but the concept car looked excellent.

Austin Rover have got form on this.

Designer: Morning team, we'd like the green light on this please. New Rover 75, I see it as some kind of 4 door Cerbera.
Team: DO IT!!

The 2005 Mustang rebirth promised much with near perfect detailing;

but ended up badly proportioned;

I suspect the same is true of almost any car ever from any car maker ever!

I think that's more a case of bad to worse. Especially with a name like "wind"...

But tweak that a little bit and you get this:

which is a lot closer to the original drawings. I believe BMW wanted a lot of the 'English' bling added to the 75 to fit their idea of what Rover should be.

Shows how much difference small details can make.

Even though this is a bit mad it surely looks far better than the standard st brown version? Confession: I had a matchbox version which may be colouring my view!

N0, it's cowering like the fat 12.5yr old who believes herself unpopular - even though she really, really isn't - trying makeup for the first time.

Disappointment weeps from every crevice (and as a BL product, there are thousands)

I know it is academic as the production version with the Metro 6R4 derived engine was really quite good and far from disappointing but what if the Jaguar XJ220 had been fitted with a V12 and AWD as per the concept.

The original Audi TT.

Yes, really.

Whilst it looked the same as the concept the real car had to have a spoiler added which in turn spoiled the look. It also turned it from a dangerous handler to a boring one. Not to mention the thousands sold which certainly diminished the appeal of the looks. It could have been a good sports car but it turned out to be a Mk 4 golf in a party suit.

Overall a hugely disappointing car.
