Seems like common sense "We want you to learn German but we're going to ban you from going to school which is the best place for you to learn German" confused

truth be told I'd settle for them speaking German full-stop rather than that mangled abomination they call German

A lot of those measures seem a tad ott and unworkable. If they do actually implement them I think we’ll be seeing quite a few cases from Austria at the European Court of Human Rights.
All it will take is the ECHR to win a few of them. And you'll see a rise in calls for AustExit from the EU! And if they can vote in this bunch, I'm relatively sure I can predict the outcome! Definitely wont be 52/48 hehe

I'd be uncomfortable with the state confiscating cash from genuine asylum seekers - sure if someone has a significant amount of cash then make adjustments to their benefits but anything more than that would be very harsh. I also think it's unworkable because it would probably be in breach of international rules on the treatment of refugees. Also banning kids from starting school if they can't speak German makes sense on one level as such kids may drag the rest of the class down due to the teacher needing to pay more attention to the non German speaker however the state should, imo, provide support to asylum seekers and their kids in order for them to learn the local language(s).

That said, I think their proposals to tackle religious extremism and political Islam are very interesting - especially tackling foreign funding of mosques and Islamic schools. The Germans could learn a thing or two from this.

Can’t see an issue with this, Turkey is at best hypocritical

Western countries should have been this strict from the start, Singapore has a very similar policy in that it tolerates zero extremism from any religion

Didn’t realise that blasphemy was still a thing in Austria.

This lady was convicted of ‘disparaging religious doctrines’.

“The ECHR ruled against an Austrian woman who claimed calling the Prophet Muhammad a pedophile was protected by free speech. The applicant claimed she was contributing to public debate.
An Austrian woman's conviction for calling the Prophet Muhammad a pedophile did not violate her freedom of speech, the European Court of Human Rights ruled Thursday.”

Well in Austria it applies to any religion.

“Anyone who publicly disparages a person or thing that is the object of worship of a domestic church or religious society, or a doctrine, [or other] behavior is likely to attract legitimate offense…”

But sure latterly most of the cases have been islam related ones.

This one is a cracker. hehe

“On Dec. 11, 2010, 63-year-old Helmut G. was convicted for offending his Muslim neighbor by yodeling while lawn mowing. The neighbor claimed Helmet was trying to mock and imitate the Muezzin, the Muslim call to prayer.”

Well that government didn’t last long.

“Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has asked for a snap election after his Vice-Chancellor, Heinz-Christian Strache, resigned over a corruption scandal.”
