Won't the payment we make to trade with the single market simply be similar to our current net contribution, hence there will be no shortfall for the EU?
Not if they negotiate properly.
Quite.

The EU and the Germans don't think so, otherwise why the huftytufty over making up a shortfall?
I hope you are right too.

I just don't trust what I read in the Express.

If the article were in your beloved Guardian, TB, I would show more confidence hehe
As it happens I just read a Peston tweet in The Guardian and I'm off to another thread to post it up.

Me and The Guardian...Louis Jockman, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship wink

This I think is why the leavers often get tarred with the racism and 'little Englander' accusations, because instead of having a sensible discussion about whether the net contribution is really value for money to access the single market and leverage the clout of the EU, or whether the benefits of free movement of people are outweighed by the infrastructure concerns if they all settle in one place, they just bang on about 'unelected bureaucrats taking over' and 'Frau Merkel's fourth reich' and '50 immigrants in one house stealing my children's jobs' and other examples of tin-foil hattery.

It just makes it look like it boils down to 'we don't like Germany because they are telling us what to do'.
By definition you cannot have a "sensible" discussion about paying someone to take even more of your money.

We run a huge deficit with the EU.

To consider paying for such a privilege is moronic.

The EU could actually show a profit if they paid us to be in the single market.

You also seem to have forgotten that the EEC was started to deprive Germany of the ability to tell us what to do. We have a lot in common with our European friends in this respect.

the EU can reform based on the member states wanting them to, which is surely an argument against the 'unelected bureaucracy' hypothesis.
The EU debated whether to be democratically elected and decided that was a Bad Idea and that the elite, who know better than the electorate on every issue, will not be subject to election.

That will never change.
That's the scary part. The 'leaders' may be just about tolerable now, but sooner or later, a nutter or two will get in. If that happens (and, given time, it probably will), how do the people who live and work within the EU countries get them out, given that the EU 'Elite' do not do democratic elections?
I take it that you haven't seen this video:-

You can see him almost sober here:-

Junker tells UK to sod off

How can that be, we've been told that the EU is outplaying us, by a Remainian as it happens.

The quotes must be made up.

The politician, whose party has close links to German leader Angela Merkel, said: "People say we could face about a billion euros in additional contributions.

Only €1Bn? What an idiot.

These people still don't get it. The shortfall is at least €15Bn. If the Germans think that France and Italy will cough up €14BN, then they have another think coming.

We could even call it the European Economic Community. After all, that name is not being used by anyone else.

We could probably save ourselves a lot of work by taking the original Treaty of Rome, and deleting a bit of the first sentence. We would then have a sensible working document.

Sweden, Denmark, the Czech Republic and Ireland would probably be up for it. I suspect that Poland would be too.

Should we invite Turkey?

On a serious note, I think that you have a very good idea.

I don't think that any of our politicians would have the balls to suggest it.

English to be ousted as the official language of the EU.

Oh dear, what a bloody shame.

France promoting French with gusto and the threat of garlic breathed over you and snails down your pants if you don't agree.

Carry on...smile

This is just what we need now, Tony Blair as the EU negotiator.

He is always willing to compromise, as long as someone else is suffering the compromise. The solid brass neck of the man is staggering.

They should put all the languages in a hat and pull one out and make that the official language. Then repeat the process every Strasburg move.

I think it's a great idea. He's a man of experience. Let's face it - it won't be the first time he's saved this country from the brink of Tory disaster thumbup

I caught a few minutes of Business Questions on BBC Parliament while scoffing breakfast; apparently an Oz/NZ trade delegation is heading UKward already, so clearly the rest of the world wants things to move quickly even if the EU doesn't.

How does the EU not want things to move quickly? I thought we said we'd need time for a new PM to be in place, time to start informal negotiations etc, whereas the EU have repeatedly asked us to invoke Article 50 ASAP & avoid any informal negotiations. I don't see how even the most frothy-mouthed can suggest the EU are stalling things.

The only thing the EU are interested in is keeping the wheels on the gravy train. The economy and well being of the peoples of Europe is a distant second.....
