I'm pretty gobsmacked by these replies, especially when referring to some Western airlines also.

I thought the industry had put this behind it and consigned these practices to the dark ages of the 20th century.

I'd expect it from North Korea or some tinpot middle east 'democracy' but not a wider extent.

Shame. and scary.

Yes, definitely, and for a number of different reasons. An open reporting culture is generally accepted by the developed aviation nations to be the best/safest way of reporting incidents. Some nations adopt a management-by-fear approach, which results in incidents not being reported, which can result in mistakes being repeated.
Same for any business really. A culture of fear is not a good one in any language!

Really? Can I ask why?

I would say anything Russian or piloted by one.

Personally I'm not a fan of Delta and American I find them so bloody difficult. It's terribly embarrassing that people whose first language is English struggle so much to listen and understand English. That said I'm flying with AAL in January because they're cheap.

Kap, here's a question for you, DJC to.

If if quickly reach over and tap 7700 into the box. Are you guys and girls going to call me straight away or is there a period of wait and see?

French cars are pants as well. Think i'd rather fly Aeroflot than Air France - if you made me choose one or the other.

"I'm sorry London can you say that again?

"Direct DIKAS"

"I'm sorry London can you spell that again? DiK Ass?"

They did, and according to an ex-Concorde test pilot I was chatting to some years ago, they tried to cover-up almost everything during the inquiry that followed.

Not on an open forum, but 8/10 if we are banging our head against a brick wall, its got an AFR in it hehe Probably doesnt help that we neighbouring France and do a lot of work for the Paris TMA arrivals.

Russian/Far Eastern have their problems, but they are 'expected' and perhaps a bit 'forgiveable' to me (with the odd exception, anyway). I end up speaking American to the Merkins, and on the whole it works well. TBH frequency discipline / load / management is probably one of the most critical and difficult problems we are facing at the moment.

Id never fly any internal Russian or F. Eastern airline or Air France. The 'preferred not, but not critical' list is somewhat longer hehe

FWIW On the whole I find Ryanair pilots to be some of the best out there, along with BA and Lufthansa and a few other of the UK based outfits (Thomas Cook, Monarch et al). I fly mainly with KLM, even though their pilots are usually a PITA to work with.
Fair enough

I work a large number of Paris TMA arrivals and departures and I find AFR to be fine, most of those that I work are long haul heavies though maybe that's the difference?

My pet hate with Americans is when they respond with "I understand...." which translated into English means "I haven't a clue what you just said but rather than asking you to say again I'm just going to make something up because what's the worst that can happen"

I'm not picky when it comes to choosing an airline I've even flown with Druk Air!

And we have KOK > DIK, as well as PINUS > DIK, and DIK > BATTY and a few others. Imagine stern Lufthansa Captain:

" Maastricht, this is Lufthansa 123, flying directly to PINUS then DIK, requesting higher please" Never gets old!
Haha brilliant, the things that get you through the day huh

Within 30s, depending on frequency load and what else we see on the screen. MODE S is also fantastic to enable us to see whats being dialled in the FMC - easily the best safety improvement in the last 10yrs.

I might clear a few other chaps out of your way as a precaution before calling you, too. One of the problems flying over Belgium and LUX is that there is usually always someone else either above or below you with <5 miles!
^ this

Some sectors at our centre filter traffic out, 7700 burns through those filters and lights you up in a flashing red and yellow box. If I see it I'm getting things out of your way. I would probably transmit after a few seconds that I copy your emergency squawk and that I'm ready to copy details when you are able. I'll be pulling up our own emergency checklists during this time, alerting our supervisor and speakers will be going on.

We invite pilots to visit for our emergencies training and the one thing we ask is please if you can't talk to us or would rather not at least squawk 7700 if it's feasible. It's invaluable. I think this year I'm signed up for LOFT as part of my emergencies stuff so that'll be good.

Air France have the best in flight food IMO, so I'm willing to take the risk.
