Within 30s, depending on frequency load and what else we see on the screen. MODE S is also fantastic to enable us to see whats being dialled in the FMC - easily the best safety improvement in the last 10yrs.

I might clear a few other chaps out of your way as a precaution before calling you, too. One of the problems flying over Belgium and LUX is that there is usually always someone else either above or below you with <5 miles!
^ this

Some sectors at our centre filter traffic out, 7700 burns through those filters and lights you up in a flashing red and yellow box. If I see it I'm getting things out of your way. I would probably transmit after a few seconds that I copy your emergency squawk and that I'm ready to copy details when you are able. I'll be pulling up our own emergency checklists during this time, alerting our supervisor and speakers will be going on.

We invite pilots to visit for our emergencies training and the one thing we ask is please if you can't talk to us or would rather not at least squawk 7700 if it's feasible. It's invaluable. I think this year I'm signed up for LOFT as part of my emergencies stuff so that'll be good.
Kap, TCAS certainly bears testament to that! I fly through your airspace as much as London, more so than Brest/Reims and down that neck of the woods. We've had flight deck chats about emerg descents when TCAS is cluttered!

Certainly in the sim my own SOP is when it's all going South, seat belt signs on and 7700. That's also SOP for the pilot not flyings actions when starting an emergency descent.

Thanks for both your replies, very good info to know. It's about 10 years (at least) since I've had an ATCO on the jump seat - shame as we learn a lot form you guys during these types interaction.

We all know why fam flights aren't mandatory but they bloody well should be. I'm hoping to do a long haul fam flight this winter as we have an agreement with Virgin for a limited number

Apologies if already said:

The pilot of EgyptAir flight MS804, which went down in the Mediterranean Sea last Thursday with 66 people aboard, requested an emergency landing from Egyptian air-traffic controllers moments before it crashed, France’s air accident investigation agency (BEA) announced.

As I've read that was media speculation/misinformation and BEA have issued a statement today along the lines of

"On May 23rd 2016 the French BEA as well as Egypt's Civil Aviation Authority, in response to media reports of an emergency call on Egypt's frequency, stated, that no such communication has been received on any frequency. Egypt's CAA said: "What was published on media today concerning a recording of a conversation between the pilot of EgyptAir MS804 and Cairo Air traffic control is totally false; the aircraft did not make any contact with Egypt’s Air traffic control"

Well if they find the CVR ( That's COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER Eric tongue outwink ) they should be able to tell if there was radio contact. I'm inclined to go with the Egyptian version of events as they ought to know full well denying that to then be potentially exposed by CVR evidence would be a tad embarrassing.

Thanks for clearing that up. smile

Why oh why do these reporters make this sort of stuff up? Can only imagine how the relatives are feeling on reading of such. frown

They won't get the chance. The CVR will be recovered and shipped wet to somewhere for decoding befor they ever see it.

So the graffiti, that was discussed on this thread within the first few pages, and had reportedly been 'not considered a threat to the public, actually said 'we will bring this plane down'.

Well, it's nice to see what they consider not a thread to the public.

Seriously; there is information, misinformation and Greek/Egypt information. I'm getting well confused with it all.
