Much more likely to be poor maintenance than a design fault given the number of A320s flying and not falling out of the sky

Does that mean anything specific?

I think we can rule out the iceberg theory

Could still be a bomb in the hold that didn't detonate properly, triggering a fire. Hence the smoke detector sensor in the toilet activating and the fixed window sensor alarming (crew trying to vent cockpit at lower altitude).

Time will tell.

Media reports have talked about 'memory chips' in the black boxes - I thought the recordings were on steel wire, or am I out of date?

So what are we thinking happened? Bomb? Electrical? Both?

More likely electrical unless a small incendiary device which isn't usually the terrorists style, Richard Reid apart. Sounds from todays news that the FO was trying to deal with it which suggests toilet fire or something from the EE bay driving smoke into the flight deck. Might even be as simple as a smoker having a quick drag (with or without disabling smoke detector). Investigation will probably be able to nail it from here.

There is still no claim from the usual suspect terrorist organisations, so I believe it's probably an electrical fire.
