What could possibly make a dog snap like that?

11 children stood round tormenting it?

Bee sting?

Brain fart?

Who knows.

I wonder how it got in. Surely the fence is there to keep dogs and kids apart.

Mirror article says the dog was in the park running around for 45 minutes before the attack. The attack supposedly started after the female who was with it took its muzzle off.

The Guardian makes no mention of a muzzle or female walking the dog, but backs up it was initially playing then turned.

like Liverpool's left back last night then.

Did ok for 45 mins then lost the plot.

I would think a lot of hungover scousers wish the same fate for Moreno as awaits the dog.

Has the owner said "my dog has never shown any sign of aggression before"? That what I usually hear when I bump into some clueless idiot that can't control their dog.

That's exactly what I thought before opening the link.

Apparently Jack Russells bite more people in the uk than staffies though but their potential to cause damage is obviously less.

A staffie woukd jump that fence easily.

My staffie used to get excited by people running. It was one of the hardest teaining tasks I experienced with him, getting him to ignore runners.

Crap owner with badly trained/untrained dog.

Go on, I'll bite...

Why did you instantly assume it was a Staffie?

I assumed/guessed the same as well. perhaps from reading/hearing about other dog attacks which turn out to be by that type of bread.

Ive not heard any/ common reports of the following dogs attacking:
Cairn Terrier
West highland Terrier
Sky Terrier
Border Terrier
Labrador
Poodle
Alsation
Doberman
Hound - Basset, Beagle
Spaniel

Presumably because often when there's a news story about a dog chewing on kids, one of these council bull terriers is involved?

Quick - someone get a cardigan and tie him to a fence.

hehe

He's never done that before! He a lovely dog. I got him cos he's so good with kids. Any dog could have done it. There's no dangerous dogs just dangerous owners.

I appreciate everyone's responses as I know full well the media doesn't help stereotyping. However I can't help but feel it's like reading a headline about someone's TV being stolen and naturally assuming it's a black guy. Discrimination and prejudice comes to mind. Welcome to 2016 guys.

I bet my right testicle the Staffies which cause this "bad reputation" are more mongrels than Staffie. Look at any real list of aggressive dogs and you'll struggle to find a Stafordshire Bull Terrier in it, but I bet you'll get a paragraph explaining some type of common misconception.

Sausage dogs and Chihuahuas have caused more bites. You just don't hear about them because they are cute and fluffy, albeit not as dangerous when they do snap. Easy pickings for the media, once again.

Then by that token they should not be off leads or unmuzzled, presumably?
