It needs elements of the military and /or the police to decide that enough is enough before anything happens.

But that could trigger a civil war.

The nature of many Latin American countries - with their long history of coups - is that the military (and the police) is normally fragmented into different competing organisations, each with its own command structure, precisely to prevent a single organisation from having enough power to pose a threat to government. It would need careful and dangerous negotiations between the military leaders to start something, and it could go very wrong.

The quality of some of the protestors is excellent:

Venezuela president says politicians are 'the new Jews that Hitler pursued'. Maduro compares harassment of government officials amid economic chaos to what Jews faced, saying: ‘We are going to defeat these 21st-century Nazis’

Guardian said:
“We are the new Jews of the 21st century that Hitler pursued,” Maduro said during the cabinet meeting. “We don’t carry the yellow star of David ... we carry red hearts that are filled with desire to fight for human dignity. And we are going to defeat them, these 21st-century Nazis.”

Is he taking the play from Reggie Erdogan's playbook? Sounds eerily familiar, what a fking tosser.

With all this talk of Jews and Nazis, are they employing Ken Livingston as their PR guy ?

Whoever and whatever they are employing it is getting dangerous when they start such talk given the "legalised" killings they're responsible for. It reminds of 3 1/2 years ago here when the Gezi Park stuff broke out and several teenagers were murdered by police and security forces, only 1 has ever been pursed, the remaining criminals continue in-situ as paid officers of the law. Frightening.

It wouldn't surprise me though if associates of the slime-ball you mention have a hand in it, they're all brothers after all and Red Ken was trying to do some dodgy oil deal with the Chav a few years ago. Global network of fking terrorists.

Venezuela's Supreme Court has been attacked by grenades dropped from a helicopter in what President Nicolás Maduro called a "terrorist attack".

Footage on social media shows a police helicopter circling over the city before shots and a loud bang are heard.

The police officer said to have piloted the stolen aircraft issued a statement denouncing the "criminal government". His whereabouts are unknown.

Is this the same half assed attempted coup through social agitation attempted by labour after the election/grenfell etc?

Perhaps we owe it to the nation to highlight John McDonnells lust for Venezuela and what the UK would look like under a labia government.

I was wondering if anyone had asked John McDonnell, Jeremy Corbyn or Diane Abbott how they thought it was going in their favourite socialist utopia.

..as well as Corbyn and Abbott. rofl I'd love to hear what they've got to say about their socialist dream country. Yet another failure.

About 100 government supporters have burst into Venezuela's opposition-controlled National Assembly, where they beat up several lawmakers.

Witnesses said the confrontation came after an assembly session to mark the country's Independence Day.

Military police guarding the site stood by as intruders brandishing sticks and pipes broke through the gate, AFP news agency said.

In all fairness, it was doomed to fail. Once they nationalized the oil industry and kicked the multinationals out, they were enemy no. 1. Plenty of propaganda on both sides.

Know someone in Venezuela. They are well off and have a nice apartment. They have just been told by local authorities in the past few days that they will have to allow at least one person (stranger) to live in their house, alongside them, for minimal rent, from Q1 2018. They have no say on the matter. The state "owns" the place they paid for. It is a mess.

Problem is, the people who would normally topple the president, the generals, are just as corrupt as him and know that they will go to jail if Maduro falls.
