I have done a lot of business with Venezuelans over the years. The country was a basket case long before the oil price collapse.

One of its major problems is crime - I don't know anybody in Venezuela who has not had a family member murdered, shot, kidnapped, etc. People have been kidnapped inside the airport terminal, and from the lobby of the Marriott hotel!

On the positive side it does have some scorching hot women.

I agree.
I married one, though can be as mental as fk if wound up!
I was last there twenty years ago And the shopping centres had armed guards as did the schools. Even then there were reports of Kids being taken for ransom once the guards had been killed at the schools only for the children to be shot once the ransoms was paid.

Looks like Corbyn doesn't blame Chavez -

http://labourlist.org/2013/03/thank-you-hugo-chave...

"[Chavez] brought in a new constitution, improved the lives of the very poorest in his country, and forged a very special place on the world stage for Venezuela"
Translation:

[Chavez] improved the lives of the very poorest in his country by redistributing the oil wealth, but failed to make structural reforms and invest for the future, so when oil revenues dropped, the country collapsed.

Sounds a bit like Scotland.
Only if you put your fingers in your ears to drown out the voices in your head
Indeed - the SNP could never be accused of improving the lives of the poor. The poor vote for them anyway. It's the upper classes the SNP bribe with council tax and free university etc

I'm not sure if this is better here or the BBC bias thread but a great article explaining how all the problems have been caused by falling oil prices and not the regime in charge. There is a brief mention of price controls but basically it's all the fault of oil. I'm looking forward to their article about the Middle East being on it's knees and the failure of the Norwegian economy.

I do think the system in Venezuela now is better than what went on in Argentina and Chile. And better than the USSR and North Korea.
It could become the new socialism slogan...
"Venezuela... better than Argentina, Chile, the USSR and North Korea."

My eldest son is currently dating a Brazilian girl.

Her disdain for her own countrymen is alarming - she describes how utterly feckless and criminal huge swathes of the population are, and cannot wait to emigrate!

However, when the TV news goes to the Olympics later we'll all hear what a delightful and vibrant society it is that embraces allcomers and looks ahead blah blah blah...

Things are bad when

"It did not give details on the reason for the suspension. Venezuelan media reports said McDonald's was no longer able to source the thin slice of bread that separates the sandwich's two meat patties"

gulp.

Brexit pales against that IMO.

Jesus Christ, that's a scary development. Khmer Rouge, anyone?

Such a shame. I love this part of the world. Met a really decent Venezuelan guy in Argentina who didn't imagine being able to return any time soon.

It's going to take a revolution I think, and it's going to be messy.

Jeez... That's bad. The money is probably becoming more and more worthless just as you walk to the shops to buy something with it!

So Jeremy Corbyn et al no longer use this example of how a socialist country can work for everyone. No more idolising the policies and political stances.

The President's cronies in the Supreme Court have just dissolved parliament.

CNN said:
(CNN) In a surprising move the Venezuelan opposition is calling a coup, the Venezuelan Supreme Court has stripped the country's National Assembly of its powers. The court ruled that all powers vested under the legislative body will be transferred to the Supreme Court, which is stacked with government loyalists.

The ruling effectively means the three branches of the Venezuelan government will be controlled by the ruling United Socialist Party. The opposition has been taken out of the picture.

Prominent opposition leaders are already calling the government of President Nicolás Maduro "a dictatorship."

My wife is Venezuelan, and most of her family is in Caracas. She is in regular contact with them on the internet - when it is working. It's getting well nigh impossible to live for most people.

Don't think it is anything to do with socialism - this government is as corrupt as any in the past, and deeply involved to the highest level in drug trafficking.

I am only surprised it hasn't all blown up long ago; ordinary folk have shown unbelievable patience under such duress. Sooner or later it had to explode, and perhaps this is the end game now. I just hope that too many people don't get hurt, and it will take a long time to rebuild what I remember from my years living there as a beautiful country with such friendly and talented people.
