So it turns out I couldn't read the dipstick on a mini coopers s engine if you paid me £1,000,000.

Worst case I have overfilled by 250ml. What, if any, harm could this do?

Tbh it's just as likely that there is no oil in there whatsoever, the dipstick reading seems to bear no relation to how much oil is in the fking thing!

I had a 2010 Cooper S and always struggled to read the dipstick. Sent my car in for some work to be done and they said it was overfilled but didn't seem too bothered.. Mine used 3.5l of oil in 900 miles so I was always filling the bloody thing up!

That amount shouldn't do any harm.

I also can't be bothered to read the dipstick on mine. I check my oil level using a certain corner on the way home, it's a 270° right corner with 10m of elevation (ramp onto a bridge) which sloshes all the oil in the sump away from the pickup and gives me an oil pressure warning for 0.1 seconds at the corner exit.

When that happens I know that the dipstick is slightly above minimum and it’s time to add another 1.5L. That lasts me about two tanks of petrol. tongue out

"They all do that, sir."

Luckily mine doesn't seem to use too much oil... However at the last service they said that they needed to put 1.2 litres in to top it up, so i have been a bit more on top of checking it.

The dipstick is completely pointless! Re-assuring that others think it is unlikely to cause any harm smile
