Afternoon all,

I just went out to wash my Mini and discovered a large gouge on the roof, on the passenger side, front corner. No other damage to the car at all and, of course, no note or any form of apology.

There is a nearby CCTV camera for a shop, but that's closed until Tuesday so for now I'm wondering what the bloody hell could have caused this.

Any suggestions? And can anyone tell me how bad the damage is/what it'll cost to fix? Admiral is currently closed for non-emergencies.

Cheers

That's a write off without question, I'd say a skip Lorry or similar has barged in to it. That's terrible.

A mace?
A baseball bat with studs in?

The small circles at the top are perfect...

Cost... I guess £1000 inc Vat.

yikes Bloody hell. Wasn't expecting that! That looks like lorry damage and unfortunately will most likely be terminal for the car.

What the hell? Has to be something industrial, maybe a tractor? That's fked up, say goodbye to your car that looks like a write off.

Hope you catch the bds.

I'd completely agree here, def looks like the corner of a skip has hit it being lifted up ... Was / has it been parked next to one recently as it doesn't necessarily look totally fresh either

I'd imagine that needs a new roof skin, shouldnt be off road for too long. It's worth covering it over with some plastic for now in case I rains.

Was the passenger side to the kerb or to the road?

Only guess I can make is maybe a rear door on a truck has swung open and done that damage, are there any other cars in the local streets with damage??

Blimey! Could be the rear overhang of a trailer - not an easy fix, me thinks.

Bloody hell!!! Thats bad, they can hardly say they didn't notice that.
I would guess at something over hanging on a lorry, like scaffold poles.
Get the plod involved, and good luck with the cctv.

This is proof that Auto correct does not really work smile

Looks a dull one OP, but post some details of your MINI, most things can be repaired, whether it is viable or not is debatable.

Thanks for the replies! My first thought was write-off, but maybe the damage is just to the skin? Obviously it's hard to tell for now.

To answer some of your questions:

The car is a 2007 R56 Cooper S. It was parked where the silver Audi is in this Street View image, but facing away from the Google camera.

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.4441422,-0.19830...

There's a CCTV camera above the door of the shop on the right, pointing towards where I was parked. Fingers crossed that will provide some answers. It's quite a busy turning off the main road, so could well have been a truck, skip lorry or similar.

It's been parked there for a few days, so could have happened mid-week. Annoyingly, I only noticed it today because I went to move the car. I hate parking that close to the junction, but when I was last here it was the only space.

There's a skip further up the road but that's been there a while. I'll ask them anyway. I haven't seen any damage to other vehicles on the street.

Thanks again, all. I'll keep this thread updated as best I can.

And for anyone who's curious, here's what it used to look like...

Is there likely to be an artic traveling down that road? My guess is he's turned right into the street and got the tractor unit close to your car to bring the trailer round, but the front near side of the trailer would be sticking out further than the tractor unit at this point and that's what's hit your car. Likely that the driver wouldn't of even known it happened. Not that that excuses it of course.

Yeah I'd imagine that's what has happened. It is quite a busy road (Southfields, near Wimbledon) and a truck may well have turned there. Hope the CCTV has some answers.

Almost certainly a write off bud, a roof or quarter panel is a pain to fix, even more so when it's in a corner and has a foot long gouge in it.
You can't really re skin a roof, well you can but costs and the amount of labour involved to make it look right is pretty big.
I hope I'm wrong as i'd be heart broken to have my car ripped a new one then the bugger-er run off, but hopefully you can sort it out in your favour.

My mini had similar damage.

Write off.

A roof skin ain't quick to replace, they didn't want to spend time getting started only to find structural damage either....
