"Critically endangered"

WTF is that supposed to mean ?

Parent should be supervising their children a bit better methinks.

I thought the gorilla was more endangered than human children?

Maybe they should have shot the kid?

Piss poor parenting.

The zoo should take a good look at its safety barrier system too.

Would receive less outrage on social media. I have an image in my head of the gorilla proudly kneeling over the carcass of the child, shotgun in the one hand and cigar in the other hehe

+1

Once the child was in the enclosure and the gorilla started dragging the child through the water like a rag doll, they didn't have many alternatives unfortunately.

Indeed. Reading a lot of the comments online about this is odd. Ignoring who's fault it is in the first place, I'm not sure if the general public know how strong apes are, let alone something like a gorilla. You've got a toddler being held by an animal that could literally rip it apart, who's to say how it would immediately react after being hit with a tranquillizer?

The footage shown on TV just showed the Gorilla stood over the kid once he had dragged him. I'm not saying they had any real alternative, but remember the similar case in Jersey when the Gorilla actually protected the kid from the others for quite some time.

And then shot the parents - and maybe all the other humans in the zoo while he was at it.

It would be known as "The Great Cincinnati Zoo Gorilla Massacre".

In a slightly less silly vein, when Jersey Zoo had a similar incident over 30 years ago, the outcome was much less disturbing.

This Zoo should not be in charge of these animals period. The shoot to kill policy should not be implemented. Tranquilizers are there for a reason, plus the fact that safety leaves a lot to be desired if a toddler could sneak in the encloser. Sad day for the animals, and heads should roll after this incident.

In the UK the HSE and the zoo'z Insurers would absolutely roast Management over this.

I remember that well. One big difference though, the boy in that case was unconscious.

I don't think a tranquiliser is the answer, they instantly take out the animal and it would just agitate it for a while.

The kid climbed over a barrier and fell about 12 feet into the enclosure, shame this magnificent animal had to die. Apparently there were two other Gorillas in the enclosure but both of them were smart enough to stay away from the kid.

Would he have ultimately harmed the child? It wouldn't see it as a threat, more of a prize, so why would he do it harm?

A week or so ago a man in Chile jumped into a lion enclosure at a zoo, stripped naked and then goaded the lions to attack him (he wanted to kill himself) - the staff there tried to hit the lions with a tranquilizer dart but ended up hitting the man with it. They then shot 2 lions dead.

We will never know, but the expert opinion I've heard suggests that if the kid stayed relatively still it's unlikely the Gorilla would have done anything. The issue is getting the kid out, tranqs aren't instant and could have escalated the situation.

The section where the boy was being dragged through the water at pace has been cut out from most of the videos on-line it seems.

The one I clicked on had it in, and it wasn't nice.

I'm not saying the gorilla was attacking the child, but it wasn't just standing over him or nursing him as happened in the UK incident.

As a previous poster mentioned, the issue is with the zoo management for what appears to be poor safety barriers and the parents.

Maybe I have t seen all the video but to me it seemed that it dragged the child to the safety of the shallows .
