Even for people who break speed limits, bust banks or post Islamophobic comments on Facebook? That would be radical for the NUS.

fkwits like this should be forced to take a sabbatical on a sinkhole estate. They'd soon be disabused of their ill formed opinions.

This could be the dawn of a new era, one PH has flirted with many times, they day where the law is enforced not with jail but with VBRJ and Hammered Sausages!

I would like to ask her what she thinks the appropriate punishment for a rapist should be.
Like wise the appropriate course of action for the nutter who killed an overseas student on a footpath near Essex university by stabbing her repeatedly, Not to mention the poor bloke, the same nutter killed earlier by stabbing him over fifty times??

It's a daily mail article. It's designed to inflame.

The point of the NUS agenda is to move the debate on, highlighting the problems with the prison system. They don't mean literally close all prisons tomorrow an let the inmates loose.
I that is what she said, then that is what she said. Sometimes what is said does inflame. Consequently one should shoot down the perpetrator, not the messenger.

The current head seems on a mission to out-loon Diane Abbott and be a natural successor.
The other problem is kids leaving college and university these days seem on paper clever, but real world thick.

Exactly, they can calculate the cubic capacity of a tin of beans in their heads, but know how to open it? Not a chance smile

When I was going through teacher training we had one lecturer who was the wife of a labour minister, trying to indoctrinate the group I was in into the dark side.
We had several arguments with this individual, telling her she should not be using these classes as party political indoctrination exercises, which she chose to ignore, So then we told her to go away (well, one of the more forthright in our group told her to f*ck off!) which she duly did - to the principle to complain about our group. When subsequently questioned about the classes by the principle we told him what had gone on. We never saw the labour f*ckwit ever again, thank heavens.
The worry is that some of these zealots do use institutions to further `their' twisted cause, some of whom may actually believe the claptrap they spout.

Shame they didn't teach you the difference between principle and principal.

Brings to mind something which happened at work last week, I'm moving a 3,300 ton engineering train along a falling gradient within a worksite down at Wembley, on board with me is the Engineering Supervisor in charge of the worksite, walking towards us in the four foot (between the rails my train is on) with complete disregard for her surroundings is a young graduate technician with her head down, texting like a demon. I slow down slightly and give a very loud blast on the horn which she ignores, the ES sat beside me says 'here we go again', I bring my train to a stand and give another blast on the horn whereupon she looks up and very slowly steps to one side but stands there with one foot on the rail, while continuing to text. The ES gets down to have a word, she shrugs her shoulders and walks off. He gets back in the cab saying it's the second time that night he's had to talk to her... 'all the education you could ever want and not a shred of common sense or self awareness'!

No it isn't a sackable offence, it turned out she was actually texting a colleague on another worksite a few miles away about a technical problem. Still no excuse not to step aside immediately and fail to acknowledge my horn blasting, it's basic Personal Track Safety stuff! With the nature of the job use of mobiles is heavily relied upon these days, the ES who was with me in the cab was constantly having to answer his for one reason or another, everything that occurs within a given worksite has to be recorded and accounted for by him. As for me, I'm not allowed to have mine switched on whilst driving but we can use it in emergencies when all other channels of communication have failed.

You're right about new recruits 'not knowing what's expected of them', in recent months we've had a few graduate drivers who've refused to partake in certain aspects of the job which have always been in our terms and condiditions, it's what they signed up for in their contract of employment yet some of them seem to have an odd attitude to the concept of 'work'!

In a worksite within an engineering possession the job's progress pretty much depends on communication via work issued mobiles (back to back radios are often useless), the maximum speed in a worksite is 5mph, in this particular case I had the loco in computer controlled 'slow speed' at 2mph with one hand on the auto brake, she was roughly 300yds or so in front of me, however, she should have had her eye on the ball and acknowledged my first blast of the horn and stepped aside, silly mare. In recent years the standard of uni-grads coming on to the railway in technical support positions has been appalling when it comes to applying common sense whilst on the ground. I sometimes wonder how they get through their initial interviews, never mind gaining a Personal Track Safety card once they're in the job...!

With apologies for veering off topic wink

if HEIs own Students Unions continue to disaffiliate there won't be much for the NUS to do; To be honest as traction builds for disaffiliation all it takes to replace a lot of the none political action of the NUS is someone to set up either a business with the shares owned by the constituent SUs or a co-op for the purchasing side of things ...

Once the NUS loses the ability to claim to 'represent' x thousand students ...
