I lived in London for 10+ years and then on one fateful evening, on a packed tube train some metres beneath the city's soil; I finally snapped. The 20 stone monster of a man who held on for dear life; to the handrail above was perhaps the small straw that broke the camels back: the smell... ungodly! I couldn't take it any more! I left to come back to Manchester; and the sunny, smoggy horizon that it offers.

But all jokes aside; I love London; my years there were great. I can see why London voted majority Remain; the cosmopolitan nature of the place works for them... but worth noting that the split wasn't as severe as many predicted. There are still a LOT of Leave' voters inside London. Also worth noting that other progressive cities voted Remain: Manchester, Liverpool, etc etc.

If London ever were to go it alone; it'd remain a very special place; and I'll still visit. But as for the rest of the U.K; can I suggest Manchester as the new capital. A major international airport, the BBC, Media city, massive foreign investment and a very bright future playing its leading role in the new Northern power house. The north was the fuel of this country - in an era bygone; and the same spirit is alive today. As well, we have just as fine eateries, leading restaurants and the like... but we also have chips and gravy. Nuff said.

I still love you, London beer

If the result had gone the other way, would the leave strong holds be bleating about the result not reflecting their view and be asking to leave the EU hence leaving London in?

I wouldn't for one, that's for sure. Talk about sour grapes.
Judging from the UKIP threads, what you suggested is a sure bet, despite you not contributing.

If an independent London were in the EU, it would be 15th out of 27 in terms of population, ahead of Denmark & Austria!

Also seventh largest economy. Equal to Sweden.

Fine, except that it's basically nonsense and not going to happen. Apart from that, carry on!

The EU memo to MEPs has said that no part of a country exiting can remain in the EU.

Scotland out, London out, waste of time, etc.
I was talking about now. Not if London was independent.

And also a fantastically multicultural city, accepting of incomers (like me) from all locations and backgrounds. Such a great place to live. Shame others don't see it that way. Normally I'd say that's their loss but they've now managed to stick their oar in we'll lose tens of thousands of jobs and seriously reduce the tax take which - guess what - reduces the money spread around the country for schools & hospitals.

Turkeys.

Christmas.

The funny thing about this is that London wil be fine and continue to be the economic powerhouse of the country.
The regions will suffer even more due tonremoval of EU funding which wont be replaced.

Scotland is a different country and can certainly leave us and therefore stay.
Stay, you say. They are not a member and do not meet any criteria. With us leaving the EU have 12B quid hole. Scotland is, forgive the expression, a big like Greece. A hand out country not a contributor. I. All for Scotland staying part of the UK but without us will never be an EU member. The EU need them like a hole in the head.

Some great comedy posts in the thread so far hehe

I love London and often visit several times a year. I do try and limit visits to between ninety minutes and two hours; this period of time is invariably more than sufficient to encounter several of the crass, deluded, self absorbed narcissists who would consider that Independence for London has some merit.

London is such a sthole these days. If it was bordered off and quarantined it would in no time be akin to 28weeks later.

I now live outside London, but to deny that it's a fantastic city is absolutely ridiculous. Saying that, the hate shown for the place that is undisputed economic powerhouse of the UK, is entertaining. As before, excellent thread TW. People getting hot under collar about the obviously joking thread was hilarious.
hehe

Independence, perhaps not.
Further devolution, rules that apply to London and not the rest of the U.K. Maybe.
More autonomy, more of the taxes generated in London spent on London.

If London went independent, do you think there could be import tarriffs on things such as food, water, electricity? Or do they forget all this stuff comes from the rest of the world and maybe they should be less insular.

This is the funniest thread I've read in a while, congrats Twig.

As previously mentioned, there will need to be a new flag designed. Perhaps a blue background with the silhouette of a "fixie bike" crossed with 2 Champagne glasses and a gold / diamante border.

You can keep Tony Bliar though, plus all the resident "luvvies", and why not Toll roads? it works for Wales, and let's face it, hardly anyone wants to go there.

If an independent London was able to stay in the EU then there would be no import tariffs from EU countries. There could be when importing from the rest of Britain which would be outside the EU. But I'm sure a trade deal could be done. After all, that's what the Brexiteers have been telling us!

As stated before, does Monaco produce it's own food, water and power? I doubt it, yet they seem to be just about surviving!!!!!!

That's upto London to decide. As mentioned since they have 7th economy in Europe, I really doubt that food water and electricity would be a problem.
Or install few solar panels smile
And rooftop gardens.

hehe
