Why do I get the feeling this whole referendum had fk all to do with the EU and everything to do with internal tory politics.

Because of the nation's voters who voted, a clear majority (4% gap) voted to Leave, and a referendum on the wonderful EU that rejected the EU as not wonderful at all couldn't possibly be about the EU to a staunch Remainian?

It was about the EU.

Sources tell me Gove urgently wooing @George_Osborne to stay on as Chancellor if he wins.

Number of Labour joiners in past week is 60,000. Bloody hell. If most joining to defend Corbyn, scary for estranged MPs (& vice versa)

I mean the setup of it and the subsequent politicking. Let's not talk about this 4% eh, I seem to remember a certain prominent politician and PH favourite saying that 4% left the matter 'undecided'. How things change.

Possibly agree, possibly disagree smile

He didn't eff the country over by joining Leave.

He may have effed the country over if he increased the chances of a Labour win in 2020 by not standing and therefore definitely not winning (!)

As it happens, with the Labour disintegration more fundamental and more violent that the Tory spat for leader, and the boundary changes ahead, the 2020 result could well be one that even the bookies could get right.

Boris jumped sides for his own political ambition and it blew up.

I don't see why the rest of us can't buy our financial services from centres in Paris or Frankfurt or anywhere else. Why should we be concerned about London FS?

It's one of many UK industries, I don't see any reason to single it out. If we buy German steel and cars we can buy German insurance.
You don't think >£1Bn/week would be worth keeping hold of?
Of course and I'm saying all home industries should be considered valuable and therefore be supported, not just one.

Short-term, no doubt about it.

I suspect he'll be back, in one way or another.

Couldn't agree more about the subsequent politicking, but I can't see how the setup works that way when the outcome was unknown at the time.

Interesting thought. Here are some interesting constituency results to go with it:

Wokingham (John Redwood) - Remain won 57/43
Bath & North East Somerset (Jacob Rees Mogg) - Remain won 58/42
Epsom & Ewell (Chris Grayling) - Remain won 52/48

We can no doubt rely on these MPs representing their constituent's views rather than their own, can't we?

smile
I'd be popping along to Grayling's constituency surgery to make sure he was respecting my vote! hehe

Think Boris comes under the category of "be careful what you wish for because it may come true" on this occasion we have escaped a bullet

I think Cameron did it to try and shut both wings of his party up. He (and the media, betting companies, pollsters) probably thought it would be a done deal, after all theoretically they could have argued a strong case for remain. Boris being the gallant loser would be ideally positioned with both sides of the party to take over for the next election.

However it turned into a shower of st on both sides and we are where we are.

Perhaps Cameron got carried away with the Scottish vote? Maybe he thought this one would be a walk in the park in comparison?

Unusually for the Tories/Remain the press were mostly against them for the EU ref.
