Oh definitely quantity, but my family ended up in the UK down to circumstance rather than by choice. To cut it short I think the negatives of this open border style immigration out weigh the positives and that is coming from somebody who has many polish friends/family and often visit the country regularly.

And your just as bad. You strike me as the sort that will immediately think "its the travellers wot dun it" when you see a village park over run with waste and empty calor gas bottles. All this after a group of travellers have been moved on from it You wont consider the alternatives such as locals doing it or an out of town fly tipper depositing his waste. Oh no jump to the easy conclusion and blame the poor travelling community.
Its called casual racism and I'm out to stop it

The sad thing is that EU money went straight to the Chinese to build a good percentage of those roads, the polish government used Chinese contractors rather than polish to save 20%

To be fair, the local hospital has been so badly run for the last few years that I'm surprised it managed to even comment on the West Tey plans. (I'm in Manningtree and had to use Ipswich & Papworth because Colchester hospital is in such a state of disarray).

ECC also don't have much of clue what they're up to - who else builds a new park & ride then refuses to put a stop at the hospital which has a massively overcrowded car park already.

West Tey (or similar) could work, if there was also a commitment to improve parts of the infrastructure. It'd be a better solution than the current one of adding a few hundred houses here and there to already overcrowded villages, often with no increase in school or healthcare capacity.

And at least your part of the A120 is due for improvement - the Harwich section still isn't and can't cope with the traffic to the port as it is.

I don't have much faith in the voters of Essex - they keep returning Bernard Jenkin, for a start!

Yours is an interesting and oft overlooked perspective on immigration, but one I have heard numerous times, from immigrants from various places. The thing which drove people to come to the UK is the higher standards - education, employment, law etc. etc. - it offers and they quite well perceive the risk inherent in unfettered, uncontrolled immigration.

Saying 'everyone' from Poland is going to be capable of integrating within the UK and being productive is as daft as picking any other country; there's good and bad everywhere.

You must speak to very different people than I do.

Most immigrants from the E8 regard the UK education system, and employment protection, as very poor compared to that available in their country of birth.

Think you're being a bit obtuse. The point, clearly, is that immigrants from anywhere are coming here because at least some, if not all factors are better for them here - and good luck to them - than in their home nation or elsewhere, otherwise why else?

Going back to the killing of that Polish man in Harlow, the media were quick to link it to anti Polish and Brexit fuelled racism last summer.

Newsnight spoke to friends of the man who claimed it was all about anti Polish bigotry, the Polish Ambassador visited the scene, and we saw lots of articles like this:

Ironically it turns out it was the Polish group who made the racist comments.

Guardian said:
The court heard how the attack, which had initially been approached as a hate crime, occurred after Jozwik and a friend, Radek Koscelski, approached a group of young people, including the defendant, at the Stow shopping centre in Harlow.

Patrick Upward, mitigating, said: “The deceased and his companion, according to the witnesses called by the prosecution, were staggering from drink; they made racist remarks; they invited violence from those youngsters; and they were considerably bigger and stronger than the young people involved.

article said:
On Tuesday July 26th, a witness in the Arek Jozwil manslaughter trial stated that one of the Polish men had called one of the teenagers, “a black ni@@@r”.

The next day, the sixteen-year-old, who would eventually be found guilty of manslaughter, also described similar racial taunts being made.

The first male stated that it was the “man in the red top”. He would later be identified as a man called Radek Koscelski.
