I am receiving word documents as attachments but I am unable to open them as I get the following message on screen

X The application or DLL C:/ Program Files\OpenOffice.org 3\Program\i18npapermi.dll is not a valid windows windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

Anyone help.

I can open attachments in rich text format, if that helps

Presume you're running open office?
Try re-installing, if you re-run the setup app you may get an option to repair.
If not, remove and re-install.

If pushed, install Office, @ £5.99 a month it really isn't that expensive.

Save the attachment to a known location, right click on it and see if you get Open With as an option, if you do, open that and see whether Word is there.

Yes to remove OpenOffice, you may also want to re-run setup for office to resolve any issues with document associations et al.

Removed open office, now get this

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel.

Also saved attachment into my documents and right clicked and opened in word but all I get is a box with the heading FILE CONVERSION and in the preview window lots of empty boxes.

Right click the downloaded file, choose "Properties":

What is the file extension? In the example above it is docx.

What does your system say it opens with?

Click the CHANGE button to choose a program to use.

Type of file: DOCX File

Opens with: Microsoft office word

The attachment on the email says it is a .docx

Does word open documents you have created?

Can other people open the word document that the sender is sending ... maybe something wrong at the sender's end.

Are they from trusted sources ? (i.e. are they what they claim to be and not malware pretending to be .docx?)
Can you open any of your own Word docs ?
Which version of Office/Word are you running ?

The first error suggests it was trying to use Open Office to open .docx files.

Now that is uninstalled, the second error suggests it has left Office a bit broken.

Try running Word and use the File | Open within it - that might sidestep the broken file association. Otherwise, reinstalling Office will be quicker than fixing file associations manually.
