Based on that definition we aren't really living in a democracy then
Hopefully the situation is about to improve in that respect. smile
Given his concern was that it is not a democracy for Boris or May to become PM, I'm pretty sure that isn't about to improve anytime soon wink.

Where but in the EU could a small-time politician with no particular talents, from a country the size of Surrey that thrives on unpaid taxes diverted from its fellow member states, have been given the presidency of a commission which — operating in total secrecy — oversees 28 countries (soon to be 27) of 500 million people?

Sums up him and his unelected buffoons nicely. A bit worrying that there are some (remoanians) who still mourn the loss of any more of his 'leadership' over us.

Gotta love an article which portrays him as a leader who led his small country to be one of the richest in Europe, via aggressive Corporation Tax policy, being held up as criticism by leavers whom I recall suggested we could become one of the richest in Europe by setting aggressive Corporation Tax policy.

Again, the bias is clear to see - if England does it, we are financial geniuses 'defeating' the evil EU by encouraging corporations to domicile in the UK. If Luxembourg does it, they are secretive tax avoiders who are depriving England.

Juncker, who was put forward in a democratic election of the European Parliament, is an 'un-elected buffoon', despite the fact that the EU Commission can't do anything other than propose laws which then have to be agreed by the elected heads of the member states and/or the elected MEPs.

You have people arguing the issue is Juncker has too much power, and then you have people saying it is Merkel who has too much power, because apparently Germany can ignore the EU Commission, or controls the EU Commission, or some other tin foil hattery around a 'fourth reich'.

Juncker to announce everyone forced in to Euro?

http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/683883/EU-plan...

Not sure how realistic this is - I believe countries can still veto this.

Express or not, do you not see a possibility for this at some stage soon?

Sod it. There are so many threads that it is difficult to know where to post.

Anyway, I have just posted this on the No to the EU thread, but it would be much more relevant here.

If this hasn't been posted already interesting read on the fallout of Brexit vote in the EU and the machinations between Junker and Merkel:

http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/brexit-...

I liked this paragraph on page 2:
"On the following morning, they make clear to Juncker that they will be taking the lead in the exit negotiations with Britain. "But that is the Commission's responsibility," Juncker protests. "Jean-Claude, we have been elected, you haven't been," is the rejoinder from several prime ministers and heads of state."

However on reading this it looks like at least some of the manoeuvring by Merkel is to allow time for reflection in the UK whilst softening the image of the EU to help influence a second vote and avoid the UK actually leaving.

I do think that despite what May says about Brexit being final and there will be no second referendum, that could happen, assuming she is the new PM. Certainly not beyond doubt that we will actually trigger Article 50. Time will tell.
That was an interesting read.

People on here have told me that I was wrong to suggest that Europe is worried about Brexit.

I've pointed out several Times that Merkel and Hollande will not allow Junker and Tusk to punish Britain. The reason is very simple. Any pain inflicted on Britain would be felt many times more in Germany and France.

DerSpiegel said:
After Merkel speaks with Juncker on the phone that weekend, her belief that the Commission president is more a part of the problem than a part of the solution doesn't change. The chancellor believes that Juncker's appetite for power is one of the reasons why the British have turned their backs on Europe.
As I have already said, Junker is toast.

I will be surprised if he is still in office in two weeks. The least embarrassing way out for him is to check himself into a rehabilitation clinic. He could keep a bit of honour, and claim that he was acting in the best interests of Europe.

The MP was voted in by the electorate (at least in part). Who in this country voted for Juncker?
I have to give that one to you, as the European Parliament party he leads has no UK MEPs in its membership, and Cameron voted against him. So no-one in this country voted for him.
So you are happy that we are effectively completely disenfranchised?

And you call this "democracy"?

Even more surprising is that you would write this on the Internet.

I understand that you are anonymous, and that in real life it doesn't really matter if we all think that you are completely bonkers. But...???

Will Juncker get the chop?

The same people who are saying he's going to last 2 weeks are the same people who are complaining that he's an unelected and unaccountable demon. So who is going to sack him then?

He won't even know that he signed his resignation letter until he wakes up the next day and sees it on the news.

He's unelected by, and unaccountable to, the European electorate.

So if he is forced out it won't be by the electorate. That doesn't mean he can't be removed, just not democratically.

Perhaps the EU elite will choose to pressurise him by revealing the extent of his corruption while Prime Minister of Luxembourg.
