Matthew Parris states that Boris won't win in a leadership contest. Indeed, he thinks he may not even stand.

The leaked email shows that Gove wanted an assurance of a senior cabinet position, for some reason that assurance was not forthcoming from Johnson. I suspect that it was forthcoming from May, as she made clear in her speech that there would be a new senior cabinet position created that must go to a brexiter. Boris has been outflanked.
I read it of assurance of Boris's intention to deal with the EU issue in the way that Gove wanted, but who knows?

I honestly see Gove as the right man for the EU thing, I don't think he particularly wants the job and would step aside once stability had been restored.

A bit disappointed with all the back stabbing etc...self- serving pricks

Regardless of who you prefer just like the Labour party they need to prevent infighting- Rather than giving personal attacks on why the OTHER person isn't good enough they should be concentrating on why themselves are best for the job..
How do you say "I'm better than the other candidate in the following areas" Without pointing out the the other candidate isn't as good at those things. 2 sides of the same dagger really.

Seems that way.
ECHR has nowt to do with brexit, it's a seperate institution, created with huge input from the british.
I know.
It is possible in a post-Brexit world to remain in the ECHR but to not have it as the top court in the UK. Who knows what the plan is, but I don't necessarily see an issue with things still going to the ECHR with the Government then able to appeal a decision to a UK court if it felt it in the national interest. So keep the good bits, but be able to deal with National security, or whatever, as we want.

Boris has to be better than Gove or May and I can't really see it being anyone else.

Out of the three I think Gove is both the most intelligent and the most principled.

In terms of popular appeal it might well be a different story I agree.

In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Boris steps aside and backs him.

Don't really understand why people are talking as if a general election in the autumn is almost a dead certainty; it might happen but I don't think the new leader of the Conservative Party would be under any obligation to call one? However, should it come to pass I can see it could morph into an "EU Referendum 2", especially if one of the main parties made remaining in the EU a manifesto pledge....
Me either. They're wrong and there is no appetite in the Conservative party to hold a general election in light of the Leave vote winning. It's truly bizarre that people keep wittering on about this.
Tin Foil Hat time: all is not as it seems. My view is it's all about Parliamentary arithmetic: I can easily envisage a no confidence vote caused by europhile Cons and the test of the HoP allying to bring down Brexit gov after Tory Leadership election. Not feasible right now as the Labour party is split. It's why Corbyn is getting a kicking right now. Pro EU Labour wants to be able to run a unified Europhile, block the ref campaign. They probably might be able to get the likes of Clarke and the last of the Tory Europhiles on board on that no confidence vote and then it would be a straight attempt to reassert parliamentary sovereignty over the referendum result, based on the mandate of a general election. Mandelson has been *very* quiet. Wouldn't be at all surprised to see his fingerprints all over the shenanigans in the Labour party.

Spineless Boris chucks in the towel.

An ignominious end to his political career.

Amusing though.

No I think it's 99% certain it will be May now.

Boris can be PM after her. I thought it would probably be the other way around - someone with vision and energy to get us through the negotiations and then a steady pair of hands to steer us onwards from there.

Good decision by him I think we need a less controversial PM.

Haven't seen Theresa's speech yet but I understand she's made a u-turn on ECHR?
I am utterly dissapointed by this, from Theresa May of all people! She has spent the last few years fighting against the ECHR to deport foreign murderers and being overturned. I'd have thought this would have been one of her top requirements.
This is exactly the kind of "bullst to sound tough" I was talking about. The problem was the Home Office, not the ECHR. May was being completely disingenuous, and circumstances are now calling her on it.

I very much doubt it is either of those.
