Hilary Benn?
In some respects, the perfect candidate.

  • Another patrician to whom your average Brit would be happy tugging their forelock.
  • Just enough distance from both the current opposition and the fkwits in government
  • Glowing in the reflected glory of a father who stuck by his principals, however ridiculous.
Hmmm ... then again?

Looks like Boris was clever enough to be the Spitfire pilot in 1940 but not up for the task of being in Berlin in 1945.

He's a very canny politician at the end of the day and knew which way the wind was blowing.

It's an interesting thing that the Tory campaign has a lot of good candidates and here we are faced with a dilemma, unlike the Labour party where very few who like Jeremy, on the Conservative side MP's might be backing who their favourite is as per their personal interaction, rather than the best person for the job. Such a contrast. Both sides therefore have lots to think about.

If Theresa May gets it, and Hilary gets it then we will have 3 of the top 5 nations on the earth under Girl Power.

Pretty amazing.

thumbup

If they do a good job then as men we will never live it down and I will have to spend the rest of my life wearing that BBQ apron with the black bra and panties on it, whilst burning my Irish sourced burgers.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I am sure they will do a good job. Even in this day and age it takes some gumption to get to being a leader of a country if you are female, as Maggie would attest.

BBC announced schedule for Tory voting :-

Thursday 30 June: Nominations closed at 12pm today. We now have the declared runners and riders

Monday 4 July: Hustings for MPs

Tuesday 5 July: Voting is open for MPs from 11am to 6pm. The first ballot is then counted and verified and the result announced by the returning officer immediately.

The bottom person drops out and the others decide if they're still running.

Thursday 7 July: Second ballot takes place. Voting is open for MPs from 9am - 4pm. Result announced afterwards.

This process continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays until they are down to two candidates.

The final two are then put to the membership of the party.

9 September: New leader announced, unless of course someone drops out before that.

God Bless HMS Great Britain in these choppy seas.

Obama will be free in the not too distant future.

I wonder if he fancies being PM?
He's already down for the Labour job.

Back on page 5, 30 mins before his announcement I said Boris would stand down. Gove was divisive at education but he got things done in a post where traditionally a minister spends 5 years and changes the square root of f**k all.
Once Gove threw his hat in the ring, Boris had his get out. He could say he was making way for decisiveness and a unifying force at a time when the country was in need.

Then off he goes to the backbenches for the next few years, waiting to return when the heat dies down.

I'd rather Gove then May, he decides what he thinks needs to be done and goes for it. May's spent her life being OK but not much else.

Good bio on Gove here: http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/education/201...

I cant see anyone from the remainders group wanting the job to be honest. Why would they not just sit it out in the back benches where and let others take the fall?

I'm not surprised by the comments that say that Labour will probably win the next election though, because THEY weren't the party that made the vote possible. Even though their own leadership was in agreement and they actively supported it.

Its almost like a Yes Prime Minister episode.

That's the Labour who'll be 2 parties by the next election? The one whose leader just compared Israel to ISIS in an anti-semetism conference where one of his supporters verbally abused a Jewish MP? That Labour?

Because they still want what is best for Britain and are prepared to fight for it even with our slings and arrows fired from the safety of our comfy sofa or keyboard.

That's the difference between them and me and you at the end of the day. So hats off and lets see what they say in the coming weeks smile

At the moment it has been all about winning that confirmation, bit like the Grand National where weak horses, such as Blighty Boris, refuses at the first hurdle. The real winner will be the one clearing the fence for the last time in that time period hopefully someone can unite the nation and be the obvious choice.

They'll never be Red Rum though. smile

On a more serious note Michael Gove backstabbing, or front stabbing, Boris foretells his death knell.

It had to be done, but the assassin is never favoured in politics afterwards.

It was a rational transaction, not an assassination.

IDS got the top job in fairness. Although he probably wishes he hadn't have on reflection!

I believe it is, from the Iraq war, called a blue on blue incident ? People have long memories and in times of need, you need people who do not turn on you. As apparent in the last 72 hours.

Probably,but then...

People don't think about details, when choosing a political party.

They think of who they blame the most and vote for the one they hate the least.

They aren't nuclear powered - conventional engines.
