So do PHers still believe that austerity is necessary?
Probably best for another thread.

however saying that we have 2 new nuclear aircraft carriers with expensive planes that will not be ready till 2023 ...

Just one will protect the Falklands .... bet it still goes ahead though ....
They aren't nuclear powered - conventional engines.
Thanks for the correction my right learned gentleman. So a bit cheaper then.

(see I am even learning the lingo now)

Our defence procurement bods don't do cheap.

Or on time, laugh

Costs have risen dramatically I believe - who would have ever guessed?
Always the case of course, especially when the technology is getting more and more advanced. I think the US Marine corp is ordering some more "cheap" 4th generation F18's to tide them over. Note the F18 is still rather "kickass".

Getting off the point here, but I note today we have sent another 250 "advisors" to Iraq. If Osborne is right and we need to belt tighten we need to concentrate on our shores in these times and not somewhere we can make more migrants come from by our actions.

Will desist on this topic now, back to the bloodbath in W2.

I can't help thinking the conservative party have shot themselves in the foot here. Say what you want about Boris but he had a unique talent of being able to communicate with the public.

He also had the ability to win elections.

I don't think he really is but neither do I think May really is - too authoritarian for a country that has moved on since Maggie's era. Maybe she will surprise us though.

I am pretty sure Boris will be involved with the negotiations, he is very familiar with the EU. Just not leader of the party.

To be fair, with the current state of the Labour Party, this is probably the best time for the Tories to put a less appealing person in charge - assuming an election is either four years away or just around the corner via a snap call.

However, should Labour put Dan Jarvis in charge and an election be scheduled for next year, I think the Tories could be in a spot of bother.

I don't think the Tories need worry about Labour, there is a very real possibility of them undergoing a split something akin to the one that gave us the SDP. They won't sort out their problems in the next four years, let alone one.

May doesn't have the balls (no pun) to deal with immigration the way "Leave" voters are expecting

Gove gets my vote

I don't think he'll win, but I like that clip.

Though he does look a bit like that precocious kid from UK 80s telly.

If the economy is doing well, and it all looks rosy, certainly. To the voters, do you see him as less attractive than May?
Yes, by a margin. Far, far, far less attractive. Does that mean May has great voter appeal? No.

The middle ground is still wide open. If the Lib Dems get their act together, they'll take a chunk of it. If the Labour Party gets its act together, they'll take all of it. The Tories can cross their fingers and hope the opposition will continue to find ever deeper holes to leap into, but it is dangerous to rely on their hopelessness and it is no strategy for the long term.

The Tories need to stick in the middle ground where they've successfully positioned themselves for the last few years and elect a leader who can connect with people from all parts of society.

Is that the same Andrea Leadsom who managed to get savaged by some light weights on Woman's Hour earlier this week? No. Surely there must be two of them? The one I heard spouted vacuous platitudes and seemed to have no grasp of the most basic facts.

I'm a political centrist and I think I'd be tempted by May. I wouldn't be by Gove.

Why because he would not be attractive to someone in the centre? That's where elections are generally won.

A Labour split would be extremely dangerous for the Conservatives. If Labour splits into one party that can appeal to the hard left and another than can appeal to the centre ground, then we are all but guaranteed a hung parliament. Who's going to form the next coalition? The two halves of the old Labour Party, their new centre half and the Lib Dems, all three of that lot ... or someone and the Conservatives?
