Can any one recommend a vice? It would just be used as a home mechanic. prefer a decent quick release system?

There is only one, Record.

However, a quick release will cost twice a standard one.

As above, Record. Buy the biggest you can get away with. Try a local search on eBay, gumtree and car boot sale. Quick release is nice but ( for me ) not essential.
