I've found that a bearing in the upper section of my steering column is breaking up.
I've dismantled it but there are no markings so no chance of buying a replacement.

Does anyone know what GM model this column was based on as I am aware the lower section was modified by TVR but I only need the top section above the tilt system?
Has anyone found spares of just that top section?

Thanks
Steve

The steering column shroud/controls are Mk3 Vauxhall Cavalier so that's probably a good bet.

No, that's the bearing that goes on the bottom of the column as it passes through the footwell.

My problem is a pair of bearings in the very top of the column. On one of them the plastic cage that keeps the balls correctly spaced has broken up which then allows the balls to move around and fall out.
Google has so far failed to find any spares so I may have to shell out for a complete column.

If you can remove and measure the bearings then just get a replacement.
Chances are that it is a generic size.

I have used http://www.simplybearings.co.uk before and received a good service.

That's what I was hopping when I stripped it down but each bearing (if it were sitting on my desk) would consist of a very skinny inner, equally skinny outer, a plastic bearing cage and 10 or so loose balls.
There also looks to be no sensible way to remove the outers from the alloy housing there being no way to get behind the outer to pull or drive it out.

I've bitten the bullet and bought a complete (Chim) column from a breakers. Was cheaper than anything available with a Cavalier label.
